This was now our second visit to Bangkok and to celebrate our birthdays we booked two nights in a very nice hotel, (thanks to Belle's nan Pat and great auntie, Mollie) complete with roof top pool. For two days we sat on a roof top in Bangkok, away from all the noise and chaos of the streets below and caught some serious sun. When it became too hot we hopped in the pool to cool down, repeating this process throughout the day.
After two days of luxury and two very good nights sleep, we had to leave the life of luxury and get back to being backpackers. We checked out and headed down to a hostel we had stayed at before and booked a triple room, ready for the arrival of Dave, who was arriving in the afternoon...or so we thought.
The afternoon rolled around and we headed to the meeting point we had arranged. To make Dave's arrival in Thailand as nice as possible (after a long flight) we had stopped at the shop and bought a couple of Chang's, ready to give him one when he stepped out the taxi. An hour passed and there was no sign of the big fella, maybe the roads we slow due to heavy traffic, maybe people were taking care due to the rain (which we were now standing in). We were studying every taxi that drove past, about another 20 minutes went by, at this point Belle decided to use an internet cafe to check if his flight was on time, it was. After 1 hour and 30 of standing in the rain with a bag of (now warm) Chang, we called Dave.
"Where are you?"
"At my house, just about to head to the airport"
"Come again?!"
There had been a mix up with the bats-men, we were a day early with the arrival party (or he was a day late as we like to think). We headed back to our room to dry off and have a warm Chang.
The extra day in Bangkok was not a complete waste, we again found Jonas on our travels and a couple we met in Halong Bay, Ant and Hannah. With something to eat and a couple of drinks we soaked up the atmosphere on Kho San Road, the major backpacker street in Bangkok. Kho San Road is one long road rammed with bars, market stalls, clubs, cafes, food vendors and people selling tat, all of which is lit up by enough neon to satisfy a 90's raver.
We headed for bed in our room with 3 single beds with only use for 2. On the phone earlier we had now given Dave the full address of the hostel, we wouldn't need to stand in the rain tomorrow.
