Hola!
After a brilliant nights sleep, ill now update you on my fantastic day! It about 1pm here, and boiling, boiling hot! it feels like eygpt all over again, so dont worry plenty on sunscreen etc.
My bed is SO comfy, or maybe I was more tires than I thought, because I fell asleep straight away, then without any interruptions, woke up feeling great at 9am. The owners of the hostel are so nice, and gave me a Quito map and with my awful spanish, i asked where they reccomended, they pointed out the statue of El Panecillo, which is on the top of a hill in the historical area of the city.
armed with my map, my money belt and a safetly secured camera, I walked half the way. I had an incredible breakfast, a small bag of fresh melon from a friendly street vendor, and a huge bag of fresh strawberries from a small market I wandered into!
I can´t stress enough how friendly everyone is here, the locals, especially the elderly all smile at you, and wish you a buenas dias (spelt wrong, sorry!) and two even shook my hand and patted me on the back. Their dress is so colourful, many many layers, which I didnt know how they coped with in the heat!
I could see El Panecillo on the hill in the distance, so I got in a cap to the top, the driver again, was so friendly, and pointed out the local markts and sights to me, then took ym picture for me when we reached the peak.
Again, the view was spectacular, surrounded by mountains and the volcano Pichincha, you have to see the photos to do it justice! I made a video there too, which Ill try to upload, but the internet is quite slow, and it doesnt really take well to uploading the hundreds of pictures ive taken already!
I walked back down on the route the taxi had taken, the road is lined with small stalls and local cafes, all with fresh juices and slices of fruit, a herd of sheep were also wandering around.
I got back into the ´historical´section of the city, there is so so much to see, everywhere is intricatly decorated, or beautifully graffitied with huge artworks. I also met a woman who tried to sell me a tiny tiny puppy, it was squeaking, and she let me stroke it and take a picture, then (I think) was trying to sell it to me for $10! Right now the hostel´s dog is whining for attention at my feet, hes so funny, a sausage dog with wild curly hair!
Anyway, later on Im going to explore the ´new´section of the city, popular with the other backpackers, passing through there in a taxi i noticed quite a few english orientated cafes and bars, so i might head there before it gets dark!
Im having a wonderful wonderful time, there is so so much to look at, Ive walked miles today, and cant wait to explore more. The youth hostel doesnt have skype, but a local internet cafe does aparntly, so I might hunt that down for tomorrow.
Lots and Lots of love, wish you were all here with me!
