¡Hola a todos!
This past Saturday our program took a trip to Toledo, a small historic town about an hour south of Madrid. As we pulled up, you could see La Catedral perched on top of a hill which was surrounded by a river. The picture is the best one I could get of the city. Although, the city sprawls into the surrounding area. We had a tour all in Spanish, with a two hour break for lunch. I got a vegetarian paella, which was decent, but overpriced (11 euro) and the rice was too al dente for my taste.
Toledo has a lot of famous art by El Greco, who spent much of his life here. The city used to be the capital of Spain, and during the Inquisition, was a refuge for los Judios (the Jews) and los Musulmanes (the muslims). It is definitely "Holy" Toledo (pun intended).
They are famous for a desert called Mazapan (Marzapan) which most of our group tried. About half of us liked it, and for those of you who know I'm a sweet tooth, can guess that I was among those that liked it. Although, I ate Jenni's for her after having two of my own... and my stomach told me it was two too many.
In my pictures, there are some from a local tapas bar called El Tigre, that is sort of hidden away and you have to know where it is or you'll never find it. Anyways, you get a full plate of free tapas with each drink you order, and the drinks aren't skimped on. (A glass of sangria comes in a larger-than-pint-sized mug... necessary to share).
I went running in El Retiro again and have decided that it is my haven from the dirty air and smoke. I know I said Madrid is clean, but the air is not so much. Anyway, Retiro is fabulous. That's all I can say because it's pretty much inexplicable.
Well, I am at the University right now so I can use the Wifi and will try to update when I am here and have free time.
Until next time...
