Arrived at Rainbow Beach after a long 13 hour over night bus journey from Airlie Beach.
We arrived at 'Dingos' in the centre of Rainbow Beach. Rainbow Beach is a little village with a beautiful err beach and a couple of cafes, shops and usual pubs! We stayed her until Thursday 6th December where we met 10 of our friends and went on a 3 day/2 night 4WD safari and camping trip to Fraser Island. We had to have one other person in our truck to fill it up. We got given a god send, the most funniest Canadian guy we ever met, and to top it off...he was a chef!! So that was his nickname that stuck throughout the whole 3 days! He even stopped at the shop and bought ginger, herbs, and other 'non camping' cooking products so that he could make our food as 'Gourmet' as he could...he was a god send considering i've been living off 'cup a soup'!
For those who don't know, Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world where lots of Australian wildlife own the island. On the Thursday we got all our camping gear, food, which included raw beef steaks, chicken, veggies, bread, egss and all the other food you could think of. and our training the massive 4WD truck before catching a short ferry trip over to Fraser. Oh I forgot to mention that the whole afternoon before we spent in the local off licencebuying copius amounts of australian toxic alcohol known as 'Goon' (cheap left over wine made out of the scabby grapes in the vineyards) and 'Tooheys' Beer.
Our group of 11 people in 1 4x4 were one of 7 other groups going out on the island. We had a short ferry ride to the id\sland. Mark opted to drive first. If you can imagine driving on a beautiful sandy beach with lots of small sandy dunes in a tall 4WD trunk with 11 people in it and a roof full of tents, munch and alcohol. Yes, i know every corner we turned had to be driven like a Granny or else the truck felt like it was going to topple over!
We saw some lovely sights on the first day, some being Indian Heads (look at pics) Pinnacles and the sand dunes. We drove around until the tide started to come in and then parked up on a grassy verge to set up camp. Witht he sound of wildlife all around you, you just had to overcome the thought of Dingos, Locusts, Spiders and snakes as they were all around and there was nothing you could do about it. Anyway, as the night went on and after our amazing gourmet steak and potato salad we soon forgot about wildlife as we all got battered on Goon and Toohey's beer and played drinking games all night! The amount of sand that found it's way into mouth was enough to make a sandcastle in my throat! I was also singing "The Grand Old Duke of York" all night trying to miss out the word 'up' and 'down', I couldn't do it even sober let alone overdosed on alcohol!
The next morning we got up, washed all our crockery etc in the sea ready for breakie. After 'Chef' made us egg and tomato omlette we visited Lake McKenzie, the most beautiful lake i've ever seen. It was so clear and blue. It took us ages to get there, through forest on a sandy track with huge pot holes and cliffs we had to drive up and down. I saw my life end so many times! After lazing at the lake we settled camp in a better spot tonight but, our tents could at least stick in a bit more grass instead of just sand. The night was just as mad as the night before, but this time we were singing cheesy tunes like 'Mariah Carey' and S Club 7 until early hours of the morning!
We visited another lake called Lake Wabby which we had to walk 45 mons over sand dunes to get there. Lake Wabby was a green lake which was surrounded but 'Tea Tree' trees so the water was great, we came out looking transformed! All us girls we soaking in it for ages whilst the lads we were running down the sand dunes (or rolling out of control) into the water! Check out the pics! Crazy lad thing. I did want to have a go but thought I may lose my bikini!
After that we made our way back to the ferry. It was time to have a shower and use a propa loo instead of digging a hole and squatting in the bush!
It was the best experience of my life!
Next stop...city life of Brisbane!
