Hi Guys,
Most of you know I am a bit of a fan of icecream (understatement anyone?!) and had heard that the icecream in Bariloche is some of the best on the planet so I was a bit excited to be on our way! The town seems to have people like myself in mind as they sell it in quarter, half or litre buckets! So again as with Puerto Madryn I became somewhat of a regular at several shops, not helped by the fact that Pete, who we were travelling with at the time, was also partial to quarter of a liter of chocolate icecream.
Oh gotta go to dinner, if any one is reading this pathetic attemp sorry i will finish it tomorrow promise, just know i am currently on my way to a restraunt that serves the best and cheapest steak in the world, last night bondy and i officially named our dinner ´best steak ever!!!!!!´
Back again, diner was excellent again by the way... Unfortunately by the time we reached Bariloche the cold weather was catching up to us and we had quite a few days of rain, clouds and cold winds so we didn´t do as much sight seeing as we would have liked. Damien, Pete and I managed to squeeze in a half day kyack on one of the near by lakes, which turned out to be a lovely clear day, but a bit frosty/frozen in the morning. That afternoon a friend of mine from school, Paull was actually (and feakishly) in town at the same time on a rugby tour of Argentina so we spent an afternoon watching his team who weren´t very good playing an even worse team from Bariloche!! At least we got out of the hostel for an afternoon. We were staying in one of the bigger hostels in town but stil quite suprised to run into a couple we had met about 2 weeks ago in El Calafate. Claire and Jon had left El Calafate at the same time as us but were heading down to Chile to ´The W´. Of course we encouraged them as we had had such a great time. Claire was incredulous when we saw them saying ¨you b****, you didn´t tell us about al the snow!!¨ Ha apparently the weather wasn´t as good as it had been for us and they spent 3 days walking in snow drifts up to their waists and being blown off the track by 80km/hour winds. It was so cold that they couldn´t take off any of their clothes at night, they spent a good deal of time cursing us i think (we told them we´d walked in shorts and singlets and got too hot in our tents at night). It was good to catch up with them he he he.. The rest of the week was pretty miserable and cloudy so we only got in one hike of about 10kms. It was quite beautiful but I can only imagine what it would have looked like if we could see something other then clouds. Pete decided to stick around with us for a few more days while we went looking for dinosaur bones in Neuquen. By the time it came round to leaving we were all suffering a bit of cabin/hostel fever and we were all looking forward to a new town. Neuquen isn´t a tourist town at all, there is nothing in the guide book about it so we didn´t know what to expect. It turned out to be quite a nice town. We hired a car and drove into the surrounding countryside where theree are a few quite good dinosaur museums heaps of deposits of dinouasur bones and even more oil wells. The landscape is very stark but beautiful and we found an interesting site where you could take a tour of a dig being run by the museum in town. In the area both the largest dinosaur in the world can be found; the Argentinosaurus, yes that is it´s real name, it´s a sauropod. Also the largest carniverous dinosaur whose name I can´t remember. They were more interested in reminding everyone that is was bigger the T-Rex from the states, then anything else factual so that´s all I remember. We had also been quite looking forward to going to the observatory (the southern most in the world apparently) which is open every night, but mysteriously the night we were there it was closed :-(- comments
