Hello Everyone!
We have now safely arrived in Australia and it is a pleasant change from Singapore! After landing in Melbourne at 6.30am and not having slept for 24 hours we greeted by some very scary customs officials. On the plane we completed an immigration form which asked you to declare any unusual things being brought into the country, including food. We naively ticked the No column for the food question as we thought that bringing two oranges into the country wouldn't be a problem. How wrong were we?! We got past the sniffer dogs but then we to had put all our bags through the xray, which is when the oranges were discovered! The lady was very strict and very unhappy announcing that the penalty for our offence was a $220 fine each or prosecution! Becki and Jen have never looked so frightened, thinking their future law careers were hanging in the balance! However, we acted all innocence and said it was our first time in Oz so thankfully she let us off this time but if we ever do it again we will be prosecuted! Let that be a lesson to you all. So after that excitement we were pleased that our journey to the hostel went smoothly and that we could check into our room where we all had a nap to recover!
We are staying in St Kilda which is a suburb outside of Melbourne near the beach. It is full of shops, cafes and restaurants which we spent the first afternoon wandering around. In the evening we had a $ 10 steak at the pub beneath our hostel and did the pub quiz but not very succesfully!
On our second day in Melbourne we decided it was about time we got ourselves a tan so we hit the beach! It was decievingly breezy which disguised the strength of the Australian sun. I should mention here that Melbourne is currently having freak weather conditions as it is not normally this hot at this time of the year. Becki learnt another lesson that day - factor 15 will not stop you burning. We visited the Queen Victoria Night market in the city which was great. It had about 20 food stalls all serving different cuisines, live music and a few bars. It was a brilliant atmosphere and would definately go again.
Today, we are planning on wandering round the city and see some of the sights, mainly indoor ones, so that we can avoid the sun for a day. We have hired a car for fri, sat and sun as we are going to do a road trip along the Great Ocean Road which is just outside of Melbourne. It is meant to have stunning scenery and good beaches along the way. The only thing we are slightly concerned about is driving out of Melbourne as the roads are massive and we have only just grasped crossing them let alone driving on them! Think we may draw straws to decide who will drive the first part of the journey!
We will let you know how it goes when we get back to Melbourne and we will take lots of pictures to make you all jealous!!
Lots of Love,
Jen, Becki and Sam x x x x x
P.s Joanne - our journal entries are written by all three of us together so Becki and Sam must be as crazy as me!!
