G'day!
We have had quite an eventful few days since our last entry. Thursday was spent exploring the city although it was so hot we didn't do much. We went to the Melbourne Museum (mainly because it was air conditioned!) and we saw some interesting things including an old neighbours set. We had lunch in a street cafe in the Italian quarter of the city. Spent the evening in our hostel's pub which ended in discovering a new cocktail (by accident!) which we named a Brown Russian, which was rather strong but tasty!
Friday morning we went to collect our hire car which wasn't exactly what we had envisaged as our car had the slight problem of a massive crack across half of the front windscreen! After consulting Mike in the UK we decided this was a little unroadworthy and using diplomatic negotiation skills we ended up with a newer and safer car but with no air con. We combined our mechanical skills and spent the morning checking oil and water, pumping up the tyres and putting petrol in the car. After this we were satisfied that it was safe-ish and so we set off on our road trip! Getting out of Melbourne was a little hairy due to the trams, 6 lane motorways and the large amount of lorries everywhere. In Australia it appears that the lorries don't stay in the slow lane and instead attempt to overtake everyone in the fast lane.
We stopped at Torquay and made some lunch on the beach, using Jen's swiss army knife! After a dip in the sea we headed off down the Great Ocean Road, which is possibly the windiest road ever. We stopped at a random lighthouse which was apparently used in the filming of the programme Round the Twist (if anyone can remember that show!). We stopped for a very civilised afternoon tea consisting of strawberries and water on a secluded beach and then we headed to Apollo Bay where our hostel was. The next day was more of the same, but hotter. We drove further along the road with a detour inland to the Otway National Park where we did the Tree top walk. This was a little overpriced for what was essentially a walk through a forest on very high and slightly unstable bridges! By the time we arrived at the Twelve Apostles we were extremely hot and irritable and being attacked by flies. Therefore we stayed for a total of 5 mins which was just enough time to get a quick snap of the view before we speedily drove to the nearest beach and dived in the sea! It was back to Apollo Bay for Saturday night, which is a small seaside town with stunning beaches and yummy restaurants that we couldn't afford!
On Sunday we headed back towards Melbourne with a few stops along the way at a town called Lorne and Bells Beach, although it was far too hot to sunbathe or do anything really! After a spot of shopping at Torquay we headed back to the city and arrived safe and sound with no damage to the car! It seems that our mechanical skills must have done the trick!
The Great Ocean Road was stunning, as you can see by the pictures, and we had a lot of fun driving along with the windows down and the cheesy tunes playing!
