Very little time to blog tonight, after 9 hrs in the saddle and in desperate need of a beer or three.
Headwind all day. Not too strong but you needed to pedal down slight hills. Drizzle all morning then it brightened up and we bowled along happily on small deserted French lanes, through an area of racehorse paddocks, butterfly meadows and many chateaux. At one point to stopped to catch a sheep that had escaped from a field and managed to get it back into the field with the rest of the flock.
All went well until we got to the outskirts of Angers. We took a wrong turn and found ourselves pedalling down the hard shoulder of a motorway! After mile we got to a roundabout, but it was a junction of two motorways with no way out! Car drivers were honking their horns and shouting things I couldn't understand. It was a bit panicky. I was sure gendarmes would screech to a halt any moment.
jc suggested we cycle back the wrong way down the motorway. I took the executive decision to climb up the embankment (very steep and difficult with fully laden bikes) and try to get out of the predicament cross county. This we did. It was hard going (particularly through the field of thistles) but we eventually got to a farm from where there was a track. Eventually got into Angers and got digs.
Despite the problems we've still hit The Loire by the end of Day 2 and are a little ahead of schedule still.
Hoping for a quieter day tomorrow.
It's hot and sunny now. 75C.
(ended up typing for longer than I thought due to the time she's spent taking a "quick shower".)
