On the road at last!
We'd planned to get a ferry from St Malo across to Dinard and then pick up a canal-side cycle track to Rennes. But, over a couple of drinks in a pub in Portsmouth, we changed our plans to turn east along the coast towards St Michael and then drop south to a place called Vitres (about 65 miles). This we did. The reason being was to gain some time to spend on the very hilly Dordoyne next week.
The run down to Vitres was not altogether good because,
A We took 1 1/2 hours to get out of St Malo! Partly caused by a bloated Frenchman who gave us duff information (he's in for a right shoeing if I see him again). jc had forgotten this part of our map (later in the day she admitted that, in fact, she did have it after all!!!
B It was blowing a gale from the SW (we were travelling SE)
C Drizzle. Warm drizzle but still drizzle
D Feeling the affects of not a great crossing the night before (not too choppy but rather too chilly to sleep on the hard floor between the reclining seats. Tried the 'cabaret'. Where do they find these 'artists'? The female singer sang from her throat - as opposed to her diaphragm. A very annoying sound. When I closed my eyes she sounded like someone had her by it. The bloke was a tad better but still sounded like Sammy Davis does Wham! We retired to play Scrabble but got the scoring mixed up so we had no idea who'd won (I think it was probably me tho). I allowed jc a couple of Latin words - I don't know why , I guess I was just so surprised she knew any.)
jc realised that she'd left her reading glasses at work. So we had to buy her some more. Then she realised she'd left dad's birthday card on the train to Portsmouth - " I'm sure someone will find it and post it". (rail cleaning staff are noted for their thoughtfulness).
Anyhow, got to Vitres at 5pm and found some good cheap digs near the centre of the medieval town. Showered off 2 days worth of grime and are now about to go out and load up with calories. Our plan for tomorrow is to try to make it to the Loire by the end of Day 2: Angers would be good.
Looks like more rain tomorrow. Huntzilla's looking very miserable. Not sure I should have brought him. jc actually didn't bring the flask as her luxury item, preferring instead to bring several litres of face cream.

Helen Hi Steve, sounds like you've done pretty well so far considering the challenges of the weather! Just off to the CLOTs get together so will remind them all to keep up to date with your exploits. Get plenty of good food & wine inside you for tomorrows long ride
Wetters Dear LUNCHi, sounds like it's going swimmingly well, so far. Please tell your lovely sister that my birthday trip is booked, but it's slightly different to what we'd discussed - only slightly though :-) WW x
