Halloween is not as big of a deal in the UK as it is at home, we found to some disapointment. Megan and I talked about carving pumpkins with our host family, seemed like something fun to do together, but when we approached Anne with this idea, she said firm No. She didnt want to encourage trick-or-treaters. which was sad.
Fridays mean excursion days for ILACA and so we set our to spend our Hallowe'en with a visit to Stonehenge and Bath.
Stonehenge was really cool, but bloody cold. It is on an open plain and the wind is McNasty up there.
It is a lot smaller than I thought it would be. All of the photos seem to be taken at angles that really play up its height and I was a little sad at the actual thing. Don't get me wrong- these stones are not short by any means. I was just fooled by the meadia once again. Its amazing and I, like the rest of the world, am very puzzled at how early man managed such a feat. We spent about an hour at the henge, walking in a wide circle (people used to be able to go up and toch the stones, but they dont let you do that anymore :-( ) and listening to our handy-dandy audio guides.
Then it was back on the bus and off to the beautiful city of Bath. Bath is a very uniform city, as most of it was made out of the same sandy coloured stone. We lucked out in that it was sunny, albeit freezing.
Our first stop was the Roman Baths- really cool, but McNasty water. People not only used to bathe in it, but they drank it, thinking it would cure all sorts of ailments (including memory loss, obesity, infertility and bad skin). It was a popular holiday spot for royalty and aristocrats.
We also visited Bath Abbey- which is very cool. I am starting to get a little sick of looking at so many churches, but this one, like the cathedrial in Prage, was spectacular.
In betweent the Abbey and our walking tour of the city, we had some free time to roam around. We saw street performers, visited some market stalls and went to the [yummy] fudge kitchen.
the walking tour was good- we had a very informative guide. Bath is also on the River Avon, which she told us means "river", so its actually the River River. Be sure to check out all the pictures, because I cannot do it justice trying to explain.
That night, once back in Harrow, we decided to spend our Hallowe'en night with Bond, James Bond. A few of us went to go see the newest Bond flick, Quantum of Solace. It was awesome as usual, but I wish I had rewatched Casino Royal before, as it picks up right where that one lets off. After the movie we went to the Fat Controller and hung out until catching the last bu home. It was a good night.
