I've decided that weekly blogs are easier for me, so Sunday updates will be the norm from now on, unless we've done something so cool that I just cannot wait to tell you all about it.
If you haven't looked yet, I uploaded a bunch of new photos, including ones of our room, so be sure to check them out.
You've already heard about Monday, so I will start on
Tuesday: was our first walking tour with our history of London class. We met our professor at Tower Hill tube station to start our Roman Wall Walk.If you didn't know, the actual City of London is only 1 square mile and was originally surrounded on three sides by a stone wall (the fourth was the River Thames). A surprising amount of the original wall still remains, so we saw that and talked about Roman London, which was way more advanced than Medieval London, which is kind of mind blowing, as the Anglo-Saxon Medieval times start a good 200 years after the Romans jumped ship and abandoned their London. Later that night we went and saw a show on our own, at a tiny little theater at the end of an alley. It was small, but nice. The show was Miles to Babylon and was about Eugene O'Neil's mother who had a morphine addiction. Eugene wrote about it in his play A Long Day's Journey into Night, which is told from his point of view, and this was told from hers. It was really good and I'm glad we went. It wasn't too expensive either, so that was cool.
Wednesday: means Shakespeare and Britain Today classes. Shakespeare was good; we talked about the performance of Merry Wives we saw later that night. In BT we are talking about the English Reformation, which is old hat to me, but we also took a mini-walking tour to some medieval churches, which was pretty cool. The stained glass was beautiful- be sure to check out the photos. Merry Wives was very good. We were groundlings at the Globe, just like in Elizabethan times, except it cost a bit more than a penny. JIt was hilarious, though my knees hurt like hell after 3 hours of straight standing. We also got very lucky that it didn't rain, as it is open and umbrellas aren't allowed. Mostly it was just great to see a show at the Globe.
Thursday: means Playwriting and history of London. Playwriting, which is only one day a week for 3 hours, was kind of awful. I don't really want to go into details, but the teacher made me cry, in front of the class, so that kind of sucked. The night was much better though. We saw the UK premiere of Bertolt Brecht's Turandot, which was much better than we expected it to be. We read some Brecht in Theatre History at UPS and hated it, so we didn't go in with high hopes for this play, but it was wonderful. And very funny, which isn't really a normal thing for Brecht. So that was very enjoyable.
Friday: was awesome! We took an AHA sponsored trip to Hampton Court palace, originally home of Cardinal Wolsey, Henry VIII's chief counselor and then to Henry himself after Wolsey fell from power and Henry took over. It has belonged to the Royal Family ever since. Everything at that place is just amazing. I hung out with Kate all day and we spent the majority of our time in the palace gardens. They are probably the most beautiful place I have ever seen. We took a carriage ride around park, which was fairly expensive, but totally worth it. I took about 200 pictures, which hopefully will be up soon. The internet has been lame when it comes to uploading photos. I could go on and on about the palace, but the photos do it much better justice. I promise to get them up as soon as I possibly can.
Saturday: didn't do much; slept in, went shopping with Kate, Megs and Cara, watched some tv, a pretty tame day, but that was good. We had a busy week, so the rest was nice.
Sunday (today): Kate and I decided to visit one of the medieval chuches we saw with Martin. They still hold mass in Latin, and nither of us have ever been to a latin service, so we wanted to check it out. It wasnt much different than the other masses I've been to, just in Latin. The music was so beautiful, as was the building itself. Then I started home, and decided to stop at Sainsbury's (a big grocery store) on the way. And I found Skippy peanut butter! (I know that doesnt sound like a big deal, but my mom will get it) When I got home the family had just finished making cupcakes, so they let me help decorate. It was a lot of (delicious) fun and was nice to bond with them a bit. Then I did some laundry. It was a good day.
