Alison's Travels
Well, the weekend came and went in a flash. Of course, that always happens when you are enjoying yourself.
On Saturday, I took the train to Retiro and met up with Mary, the teacher I have been working with. It has been really nice spending time with her because she is my age and we are able to take our minds off of school and focus our attention toward fun things such as SHOPPING! I must say that the Mastercard had quite an extensive workout!
Mary and I started the day by having lunch in Puerto Madero at a restauarant called Marisol. The weather was nice so we sat outside by the water. Then, we walked a short disatance to Galeria Pacifico. I purchased several leather purses and I feel like I got such a great deal! Finding clothing has been harder for me because of two reasons: A) I can't quite get my size right and B) the stores are selling jackets, sweaters, pants and turtlenecks for the upcoming winter, while I am wanting skirts and sandals for summer.
Sunday was cultural day with Adriana. First, she took me to Teatro Colon, which is a famous (and beautiful) Opera house. We went on a tour that took us into the theater and down 7 floors into the basement. We saw the parts of the theater when the orchestra and ballerina's rehearse, workshops where costumes, accessories, and shoes are made, plus a lot of really neat "behind the scenes" things. After that, we went to the MALBA Museum (Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires). Not only did I see some great pieces or art, but it also communicated to me a lot about the culture. I know my students discussed Frida Kahol in spanish class and she had a painting in this museum.
Currently, it is noon on Monday here and the kids are playing outside. This morning, I got to sit in as the year one teachers did some PYP planning and their conversations are all too similar to the ones that we have among Westlake teachers. I have always loved the PYP, but now I am so passionate about it. It is so amazing to travel to another hemisphere and despite a slight languge barrier, the teaching philosophy is the same. I can walk into any classroom at Northlands and feel totally comfortable with the areas of study. The bell is about to ring at any moment and I will have to head to year two.
Can anyone guess what I am doing after school? SHOPPING! It is my last chance so I am going to take advantage of it!
I hope everyone has a great week. Its funny to think that exactly one week from today I will be back in my own classroom at Westlake. Having so much to look forward to makes it easier to return home from a facinating journey.
