Alison's Travels
Hello to everyone in Texas! Guess where I am....
I arrived in Buenos Aires on Sunday morning at 9:30. Luckily, I slept all but one hour of the 10 hour flight so I was full of energy when we landed. So far, everything has been very smooth. Elsa picked me up at the airport and I went back to her apartment for a quick shower and to phone mom and dad. The weather was extremely pleasant with clear, sunny skies, and warm temperatures so Elsa took me to El Tigre, which is right by the Delta. The area we visited is called Puerto de Frutos because it used to be a fruit market. It is an incredibly busy and crowded outdoor market, selling all sorts of items, mainly wicker and things made by the vendors. I have not purchased anything yet, but I have been blown away by how much everything will cost me. This could be trouble! To convert pesos into USD, I just divide the price by three because 1 USD= 3 pesos. For instance, I saw this beautiful handmade sweater that was 45 pesos. But, in USD, I am only spending $15! After looking around the market, we ate lunch. I had chorizo (which is sausage), salad, and steak. After braving the bustling streets to head back to Elsas, I took a long afternoon nap. Good thing because it is now half past 11-way past my bedtime on a school night! I have met Daniela, a teacher who comes to Northlands from Scotland and we all had empanadas for dinner here at Adrianas. One of the hardest adjustments for me is going to be late dinners and getting to sleep later than I am used to. I am staying at Adrianas apartment for the night, and will be traveling to school with her in the morning.
All of the boys will be thrilled to hear this interesting fact Elsa told me. Argentina is playing in the world cup this June, which will be held in Germany. The game will be held during the evening in Germany, but with the time change it will be in mid school day in Argentina. So, many schools are either cancelling lessons for the day so the kids can watch the soccer game or a TV will be brought into the classroom so no one will miss it. Can you imagine closing school for the Super bowl or World Series? Granted, our games are held solely with the USA and are played in the evening.
It is comforting to know that I have friends in Texas who have been thinking about me during my trip. I sure hope to post updates her quite often. I am sorry if my punctuation is a little off- some of the keys are in different places and I can not figure out how to make an appostrophe to show plurals. Actually, it took me a good 15 minutes to figure out how to make the @ symbol so I finally had to rely on my good friend google.com. On the flip side, check out all these cool symbols I can type: ??¡¡¡¡¿¿¿ÑѰ°. I am easily amused.
To all my Westlake friends and students- I know tomorrow will be especially exciting for you to meet Miss Cecilia. I hope everything goes well and can not wait to hear about it soon. Luckily, I briefly met her on Saturday morning before my flight and I know you will enjoy every minute of her visit.
Time for me to go rest my eyes. Goodnight!
