Today we woke up early to head to the Elephant Nature Park (the reason why we came to Chiangmai). We were picked up by Mi who was one of the people who worked at the nature park. It took just over an hour to get to the park and during that time we watched a video about the park, what it does, purpose etc. Mi gave us a few tips and rules we should follow whilst at the park particularly mentioning Hope, one of the young male elephants in the park who is naughty and very cheeky. It was an overcast and rainy day which turned out to be very good because it wasn't too hot and the sun wasn't very harsh. As we arrived we went straight to a place called the elephant kitchen which was where the food for the elephants was stored and prepared. The food consisted of bananas, corn, watermelon and pumpkin. We were asked to peel some corn which we were later going to feed the elephants. The park had 37 elephants and each had a large basket that was filled with food that would be fed to them. For the young elephants and the very old ones, the bananas had to be peeled for them and the food be broken into smaller pieces otherwise they pretty much ate the food as it came. We went to feed the elephants and then had a look around the place and had lunch. Everyone at the park ate the same food at the same time after all the elephants had eaten. After our lunch it was time to bath the elephants. We were given buckets and walked down to the river with the elephants. We balled the water onto the elephants with the bucket and the more and more splashing there was the more excited the elephants were. Some of them decided to go deeper into the river and roll around in the water themselves. After a bath we walked around with the elephants as they were roaming around re-applying there sunscreen (dirt and mud). We then went to wash our feet and watch a short video about the conservation efforts of the nature park and had some afternoon tea. At 3:45 was the second feeding time for the elephants and again we fed them their vegetables. After feeding time we headed back to Chiangmai and had some dinner (we ate dinner at a place called Dukes - pretty good pizza) . After dinner we walked around the markets a little and went back to the hotel and watched Die Hard 2.
