A windy night by the lake, but weather had improved by early breakfast time. Left our home for the night by nine o’clock but quickly saw that the weather had changed as we travelled south into Fiord land.
We knew it was a shortish drive by this trip’s standard but we were keen to book onto our Doubtful Sound cruise for tomorrow, with tomorrow’s trip booked and paid for (ouch) we chose a quirky paid for campsite and because visibility was poor and rain had set in decided to explore Manapouri with a map we had picked up at the cruise centre.
Now we think we are smart with maps but I’ll leave it to you imagine how two geographers felt when they realised that the town centre map they were tying to use was of Te Anau , 20 km north. Manapouri has a couple of motels and a cafe of the unsophisticated kind ( lovely bacon and egg baps) walking tracks and we’re guessing views across the lake but nothing else but a dump station to get rid of our freedom camping produce!
We then drove to Te Anau for a wander as we had studied it’s layout for so long in Manapouri! Restocked with a few more provisions we returned to our campsite for a late lunch and found the sun coming out, so off for a walk .
