April's Travels
Franz Josef is a glacier town. We did the helihike today which was fab. The helicopter (i am such a kid and a helicopter ride is like getting a new toy at christmas to me) took us up to the glacier. It is absolutely massive, looks like icing sugar piled high and wide and splays out between mountains. Almost looks like an avalanche waiting to happen. We went up and down the glacier before landing in the snow. From there we strapped on our spikes, grabbed an ice pick and hiked off into the glacier.
We went through little caves, holes, up and down slopes. Becs and I were at the back of the group, thinking i was funny i told Becs that the guide and told us two not to follow the path he'd just made (of course he had said the opposite). She was behind me so having this is my head i walked on, stepped off the path he'd made and fell into a hole. What a wally!! Then climbing up into a hole i cracked my head on an ice boulder and thought i'd lost my front teeth. I actually did manage to make it round unscathed and in one piece suprisingly. It's easy because you walk on snow but difficult when you're going through tiny crevices and uphill because the walls around you are ice and so slippery you have nothing to grab on to. Not sure what the ice pick was supposed to be for but it looked great and i hacked at lots of things along the way!!
We snoozed much of the afternoon after our hard morning tee hee hee not. That's it for today!!
Lots of love all.
