Antoinette Hildebrandt's Travels
Today was our last day in Rome. After packing our bags we dropped them off at "stow your bags" and organised a transfer from there later on in the afternoon. We set off for the Spanish a Steps. The last time I was in Rome (20 years ago) the steps were closed off for restoration. I was hoping to see them properly this time.....but guess what? They were closed for renovations! I couldn't believe it.
The we headed off to the museum of the Capuchin monks. We had heard about their crypts decorated with bones and were interested to find out all about them. They were started by Francis of Assisi. I'm not sure what he would have thought about the interior decorating. I was interested to know what spiritual reasons they had for the bone decoration but as far as I could tell the story is that some monks were locked up in the crypts and after a while they asked their captors if their resident artist could use the bones to decorate; so they did! It's very strange and morbid but it was interesting none the less. You couldn't take photos but I've included one from Google.
We still had plenty of time do we had a look in the Museum of Rome and then wandered over to the Jewish quarter and to the Tiber Island before heading back to collect our bags and catch our ride to the airport.
We are currently waiting for our flight at the Fiumicino Airport - looking forward to coming home.
