Antoinette Hildebrandt's Travels
If I thought yesterday was bad today was worse. We had booked a 2 hour tour of the Vatican museum and the Sistine Chapel. I thought they'd all be at St Peters but I was wrong. The line for those wanting to buy tickets wrapped all the way round, almost to St Peters. Luckily we got to skip all that but it still took us nearly an hour to get in. Then it was so crowded we hardly got to see much as the crowd surged forward on their way to the Sistine Chapel. It was crammed packed and although you were supposed be quiet in the chapel it was impossible - there were just too many people. For all those who have been in you will know it is a bit of an anti climax....not quite what you expect. By this time another hour had passed, we'd had enough and all of us just wanted to get out of there - particularly Lisette who'd spent most of the time looking at people's rear ends and hanging on to me so she wouldn't get separated. Typically at this time of year the museum would get 10,000 visitors per day. In peak season 20,000 This week 30, 000! Aargh.. So note to self; before booking a holiday in Rome one must also consult the Catholic calendar (not the one with the good looking Priests on it) to check for events of significance
