Antoinette Hildebrandt's Travels
Today we headed off to Venice. It probably wasn't one of our better days - nobody had slept well so we were all pretty grumpy to start with. Our train was delayed by 1 1/2 hours so that was 1 1/2 hours less we had to do things. Isaac forgot to restock his test strips (which he realised only after the train had left the station) so only had one left for the whole day - he would normally test his blood sugar levels at least 6 - 8 times are day; more often if he is doing a lot of physical activity. Once we arrived we planned on getting the ferry to St Marks square via the grand canal but ended up on the one that went the other way via the port. So the Hildebrandts weren't a particularly happy bunch as we sat on some steps in the square to eat our lunch. The square was really busy despite the cool, (Venice was surrounded in fog today) this was because the Carnival of Venice is on. There were lots of people dressed up in carnival clothes and masks wandering through the crowds and dancing on the stage. We went through the Doge's Palace. Yet another beautifully decorated and ornate building. We really missed that lost 1 1/2 hours as there wasn't much time to do anything else. We walked through the narrow roads and over the many bridges in the direction of it train station stopping in the many shops along the way. We had booked a 5:25pm train home and wanted to be at the station around 5pm. No one was keen for a gondola ride - I think the ferry had been enough for them. What do you do on a 2 hour train ride when you are tired and bored? Selfies of course - the people they let into first class.......
