Bonjour!
We (Ant & the Nats) are currently lounging in the Tuileries gardens outside the Louvre museum with a bottle of frozen-pea-chilled (nowhere sells ice!) champagne we picked up yesterday on our day trip in Epernay!
We got the train out to Epernay (Champagne) on Sunday morning, arrived about midday and started with a quick visit to Moët & Chandon as its the first stop on the famous "Avenue de Champagne". Inside we came across a chandelier made entirely of champagne flutes, a 15 litre magnum of Moët and a free water dispenser (well we're budget travelers after all!)
Second stop was a small and fairly unknown champagne house named "Paul-Etienne", where we met the owner and creator of the label (the brand is only about 6 years old) who was a very entertaining and friendly French man with a big passion for his dream of joining the exclusive list of champagne houses. We sampled his creations, which put Aussie sparklings to shame, and promised to return for a bottle (which we are now sipping on in the gardens).
Next came a laser-guided train tour of the underground caves of the Mercier champagne house (sounds more awesome than it was) and saw the kilometers of caves where the champagne is aged. The second part of the tour involved a brief disclaimer about responsible drinking before we were loaded up with 3 big flutes of Mercier champagne to loosen our wallets before our exit through the gift shop!
A final stop at another smaller house and 3 more flutes kept us floating back into town for a snack and then a final visit to a champagne tasting bar where we sampled 5 champagnes from lesser known houses and then teleported back to Paris on our champagne wings for a savory crepe and then bed!
Today we are having a relaxed day before our train tomorrow to Lyon on the east coast of France for 3 nights.
Catch you all soon!
Ant, Nat & Tan (aka Nat Carolan)
