Our road trip from Latvia into Estonia was an interesting one. Crazy driving has a whole new meaning now.
1. Major highways are all single lane two-way roads with no overtaking lanes and speed limits have no meaning, even though speed cameras were frequent. One is always expected to drive as far over in their lane as possible even if they are off the road in gravel to essentially create two lanes so that traffic can drive up on the inside and overtake you.
2. The roads them selves are quite run down that the tires create grooves in the roads so when it rains water just sits in them. We drove into a huge storm so combine these two elements and we were soon pulled over on the side of the road to wait it out.
Our first stop in Estonia was at the beachside town of Parnu. Unfortunately a huge storm hung over our heads and it was not as hot as we hoped so we only got as close as putting our feet into the Baltic Sea.
We continued on to our destination of Soomaa National Park. The second largest national park in Estonia, but small to our standards. Being on bear alert in an Estonian national park we had one false sighting, a very very large hairy brown coloured dog that had our hearts racing for about 5 hopeful seconds.
Our accommodation was amazing. A farm-like Estonian ranch set on a riverbank in the National Park. Ant's dream fire place beside the river, with fire cooker and awaited him, but dreams were dashed when a storm set in all night. Luckily it had a huge kitchen, so a home-cooked dinner, drinks and a movie indoors it was.
The next day we waited out another downpour to do the regions best known walk. A walk through the bogs!! Landscape we are yet to come by in Australia or any of our travels. A beautiful walk through forest and open planes on board walks, as bogs can be meters deep and look like the marshes that Frodo was in, expect much nicer.
After this it was onto Tallinn......
