Boy were we glad to leave the oppressive heat of Chennai to reach Valpari yesterday which has to be the prettiest spot in India. It's a balmy 80 degrees during the day with periods of rain followed by cool evenings. We are staying in a home stay which is a large cottage surrounded by flowers with views of the hills.
Valpari is an animal reserve, we've seen signs warning us to give way to elephants, tigers, panthers, cheetahs and lion tailed monkeys. So far we've only seen the monkeys who are very cheeky and will dive into your car searching for food should you leave the window open. We heard today that a local house was destroyed by a herd of elephants after food. It doesn't seem real but Jetson has seen most of these animals mostly at night and the locals often leave the tea estate until their children are older as the animals see little children as easy prey! Jetson opened his door one night to see a cheetah walking past and he lives in a built up area!
This is another tea heaven, as far as you can see there are hills that look like patchwork with squares of green tea bushes. As we passed the tea factory we could smell the dampness of the leaves being dried. Pity there are no quaint tea gardens here to sample the tea but it's a wonderful place.
This morning we visited 2 churches where Jon shared about our travels with Jetson interpreting into Tamil. He's been the perfect host and pastors 2 churches locally and is passionate for Jesus!
Next stop Hosur and Bangalore by train to catch up with Jon and Lori and some much needed down time.
