In the morning we explored a little of HCMC on foot...not an easy task as the traffic is crazy! The only way to cross the road here is to walk slowly but surely into an oncoming sea of mopeds and hope they all drive around you. Pretty terrifying at first but after following locals for a while we got the hang of it and were soon diving into the traffic! Our reward was lunch at a nice little cafe watching the world go by.
We then headed out on a tour to the Cu Chi tunnel complex about 70km out of the city. The huge network of tunnels was built by the Vietcong during the Vietnam war and used both as a base to attack American occupied HCMC and to shelter locals from bombing. Before seeing the tunnels themselves we were treated to an introductory video much like a wartime propaganda film as it celebrated a young girl awarded the "silver american killer medal"! The tunnels themselves were fascinating, as a local guide demonstrated how they were used for all aspects of daily life - sleeping, cooking and fighting. A selection of gruesome, homemade mantraps was also on display! Best of all though, we were then able to crawl through some of the tunnels, it was so cramped and claustrophobic that we could all only manage about thirty metres before we needed to escape - and these tunnels were supposedly 'enlarged for westerners'! Andy then passed on the opportunity to pay loads of money to fire live ammunition from big guns on the firing range.
The bus ride home was rather eventful. At some traffic lights the bus window was totally smashed by a rogue stone fired from a strimmer at least a hundred metres away, bloody scary at first but luckily no one was injured! Just another random thing that happens on a days travel in Asia, I think we becoming immune to these things now!
