Merry Christmas everyone from Northen Peru, in the mountain town of Huaraz. We hope that everybody has had a nice christmas with the family back home. Here´s a bit of what we have been up to the last two weeks.
We left southern Ecuador, Vilcabamba, to head towards northen inland Peru of Chachapoyas. Its not a heavily travelled route as most backpackers cross the border alongside the coast! The inland crossing is supossed to be alot more scenic, but it was a very rough ride. For two days we travelled with buses, minibusses (collectivos), taxis and tuktuks in the low Andes borderlining with the Amazon jungle. The trip to Chachapoyas, only a hundred couple of miles, took ages cause of windy mountain roads and infrequent depature-times! After two very long days of travelling we made it to our first peruvian destination, Chachapoyas. The place is famous for alot of Inca ruins scattered around lush semi-high mountains. We decided to visit the most famous one, Kuelap! Its an old Inca fortress with high massive stone walls situated on a 10000 feet high mountainside, built approx more than a thousand years ago. Allthough none of us are really interessted in the Inca history, we both did get quite impressed by the ruins, and all the lovely llamas living there! On the way we also got to try some nice peruvian cuisine, which is a lot bet ter than the ecuadorian one.
From Chachapoyas, it was time for yet another haggering bus journey, now going towards the coast! We both felt it was time for a bit of sun andsand, the last water we saw, being Galapagos. The small fishing village of Huanchaco was perfect, and provided awesome waves for me to surf on, while Charlie soaked up the sun! My teacher there, a former pro surfer himself, taught me loads of tricks! It was nice being able to surf some of the smaller waves, though the big ones were left for the Pros…Charlie was happy to get herself a bit of a christmas tan, I managed to turn my nose into something inbetween Rudolf and Michael Jackson! (Tip: always remember sunblock when surfing!)
Christmas coming close, we decided to head for the mountains yet again, in hope of seeing a bit of snow-caped peaks! The peruvian Cordilla Blanca had plenty of white mountains and glaciers for us to look at, giving the Christmas a more homely feel (Both England and Denmark covered in snow, buh!). Unfortunantely we both got ill in Huaraz. Me, arriving in the town with altitude sickness/food poisening and Charlig getting a bad stomache, ironically after our best meal so far the on the25th. That meaning that both of us have spent quite a bit of time on the toilet here, though not indicating that we havnt enjoyed Christmas, on the contrary!
We have been staying at a lovely family hostel, were the people were kind enough to arrange a christmas dinner for all the travellers staying here, allowing us to experience the peruvian way. We had our Christmas dinner at midnight the 24th, a lovely turkey anss champagne, and afterwards we enjoyed roof top views of the citysfireworks, making Christmas a bit like new year! The 24th we also rented mountain bikes and cycled 30 miles downhill in the Huascaran national park, a truely amazing experience. The scenery being some of the most dramatic we´v e seen so far! Only minus is that our bodys are complety shaken from the gravel roads!
Now getting towards new year we are leaving Huaraz and hoping to make it to Cusco in time for the big celebration!
We hope you all have a lovely holiday and a happy new year too..
Best wishes and feliz navidad
Anders and Charlie!
