Little Corn Island i det caribiske hav!
Mon ikke the rich coast folger trop!
Bedste hilsner
Anders og Charlie!!
Hola Everybody from Granada, Nicaragua!
We're back on the blog after spending a brilliant time in Nicaragua. We are just about to leave for Costa Rica now, and therefore ready to tell you all about what we have been up to these last 2 weeks!
After spending the night in San Pedro Sula we had to do and overland bus in Honduras! We felt tired as we didn't get much sleep in our overpriced hostel. Gun shots and bombs were fired everywhere outside!!! We both thought civil war had broken out, remembering the governmental crisis the country is caught up in, but in fact, Honduras had qualified for the world cup in South Africa next year and people were therefore celebrating…BIG TIME! Driving through the beautiful landscape next day we didn't only get to enjoy the scenery, but also get to see a lot of happy football fans!
We arrived into northwestern Nicaragua in the late afternoon. The western part of Nicaragua is dominated by volcanic activity. The nature is amazing and you always have a smoky mountain in sight! Our first couple of days was spent in Leon! Colonial buildings, student-communities and volcanic scenery are all factors that make this city interesting. Unfortunately for Charlie, she had to stay in bed with a vicious ear-infection for all the diving. I, on the other hand, had the chance to go volcano boarding down the deadly looking slopes of Cerro Negro, a tiny volcano outside Leon, which is covered in black sand, making it perfect for "downhill adventures!!" Trekking up the mountain our group got a bit anxious. The downhill speed record for mountain bikes is set here - A French guy speeding 110 miles before crashing and spending half a year in a hospital! Luckily for us (our guide told us) our boards probably wouldn't go faster than 50 mph!!!!! We didn't get to go quite as fast, but the best part was that we made it down there alive!
After a couple of days in Leon, Charlie feeling slightly better, we travelled on to Little Corn Island. A tiny palm-fringed island in the Caribbean Sea. This place is paradise, but still unspoilt because it is quite a trek to get there! Firstly we took at small plane from Managua (Nicaragua's dodgy capital) to Big Corn Island. I thought the ride was smooth , but Charlie made it clear to me that we had been close to dying!! I found it somewhat hard to believe her, hehe…After landing on Big Corn you take a small 30 min motorboat to Little Corn Island! Unfortunately we had to cross the rough seas in the middle of a storm, and rough it really was! Soaked from top to toe after 2 metre waves surrounded the little rowing boat (that may as well have been a tin can)... we were happy to set foot on firm ground!
This place really is one of the best places we've ever visited! The island is tiny enough for you to walk around it and only has a little village besides unspoilt beaches and attractive marine life for our diving sessions! We stayed in a lovely little hut right on the beach…Being able to fall asleep every night with the sounds of the waves in the background is magical! We did a bit of diving here too and ran into 30 dolphins and 20 eagle rays…Amazing! Unfortunately the weather was really wet and we only had 2 days with proper sun. While we waited for the sun to come out Charlie cut my hair with a Swiss army knife-scissor - a job well done! Besides that we were chatting to the locals and eating tasty food at a family restaurant! We even ventured into the waters for some snorkelling whilst the heavens broke!!
Both sad to leave, we arrived in another beautiful city, Granada, yesterday. This lovely place will be our last stopping point before Costa Rica. Nicaragua has turned out to be an amazing country, maybe the best so far, but its real gift, is its people, which are some of the friendliest and kindest ever!!
We hope to see more of that in the rich coast!
Best wishes…
Anders & Charlie.
