Bedste hilsner
Anders og Charlie...
PS...Julepynt og palmetraer krydser ikke klinge!!
We´ll start this blog entry by saying sorry for the long pause in updates, but twenty days in Costa Rica didn´t leave much time for photo uploads....Here´s what we accomplished!
First of all..Its been three weeks of national parks! The charm of Costa Rica was for us, its amazing countryside! The cities are nowhere near as idyllic or architectonic as nearby regions we´ve seen, but the population remains friendly as ever! The "Ticos" have been leaders in eco-tourism for alot of years and has (inspite of alot of visiting foreigners) preserved the nature through loads of national parks. We set out to visit just a few of them!
At the moment - Costa Rica may very well claim the award of the greenest country in the world.. as green is literally all you see..Rolling hills buried in thick forest, Volcanoes surrounded by thundering waterfalls and black sand beaches with lazy palm trees nearby! The wildlife of Costa Rica is also the richest we´ve encountered - Its like walking around a zoo, except no cages of course!!
We started out in the north, coming in from Nicaragua. We visited Rincon de la Viaje national park, where we swam in an amazing waterfall and saw volcanic activity, boiling mud pots!! We then travelled to the pacific beach of Playa del Coco, to do some diving. The beach here wasn´t too nice, but the marine life was spectacular! We saw our first manta ray, plus bull sharks and loads of eagle rays! It was really good diving, but unfortunately a bit expensive!!
From there we travelled inland to Costa Ricas most famous place - Volcan Arenal! Central Americas most active volcano, which at night time, can be seen erupting and spewing out lava! Unfortunately it had a quiet period when we were there, but the nature around the area is still beautiful! We also managed to rent a car here, and it was quite liberating to drive around the area for a bit!
Further on to the pacific coast of Manuel Antonio! Another famous national park by the pacific! It´s got amazing beaches and alot of wildlife, unfortunately a bit crowded by tourism that do more harm than good! We actually felt like hitting an american woman who tried to handfeed the monkeys bananas, calling out "Come here honeys!!"...STUPID!!
The pacific beaches of Costa Rica also offers world class surfing! We rented a board for the day, but only to figure out that surfing takes a lot longer to learn, plus Charlie thought the waves were "annoying!"..hehe..
We spent the last four days on the OSA peninsula which has got some amazing rainforest trekking in Corcovado National park. We hired a guide to take us on a three day hike through this territory! We soon realised how useful our 50-year-old guide Vilmar (Crocodile Dundee!) was. This place is animal territory, not human! To me it was paradise, for Charlie everything was amazing!! (except the deadly snake we ran into!!!) Through three days of hiking we treked around 35 miles on beaches, jungle trails, through crocodile and bull shark infested rivers (yes, its true!!). We saw hundreds of monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans, snakes, taipirs, crocodiles and alot of amazing forest-formations!
It was a tough and very wet, but it was well worth the effort! The only disadvantage was that we didnt get to find a wild cat, and that we returned with a bit to many blisters! AUCH!
Glad to be back in the city we showered and packed up our filthy clothes and shoes and spend a full day travelling into Quito, Ecuador! This is our base for the moment, but more adventures are coming up! Tomorrow we fly to Galapagos for another week of wildlife-spotting and diving!
Central America is truly a world region worth to visit! It´s cheap, easy to get around and in two months time, we have seen some truely magical places!
Best wishes..
Anders and Charlie!
Ps. Palmtrees with christmas decorations is a no-go!
