Hello everyone! We´re back on the blog, now situated in Northern Guatemala! But for now, lets tell you about the tiny country of Belize!
After a somewhat tiring day, travelling from Playa del Carmen, crossing the border, taking a far from comfortable Belizian bus, and finally a short boat-ride, we reached our destination of Caye Caulker!.
This tiny palm fringed little island in the North Belizian sea, where to be our home for the next three days. The island itself is probably the most relaxing place we´ve ever been to, with its coloured houses, sandy patches and slow-going-people. It´s rasta-country. Belize has caught loads of inspiration from its carribean neighbour Jamaica, and you see loads of people with dreadlocks and Bob Marley-outfits! They actually tell you if you´re walking too fast!
The hostel we stayed in had some nice people there, unfortunately some of the clientel were uninvited! Rats and mosquitos! Both of them made us mad, so we didn´t really sleep much on the island, but it´s still a favourite place! Now, staying on Caye Caulker wasn´t actually the main goal of the trip to Belize, we were far more attracted by the world famous dive-site THE BLUE HOLE! A perfect circular hole on the outer reef, almost 460 feet in dept and filled with omnious looking reef sharks.
With the Belizians being overly relaxed people we were just a bit worried about going down to 40 metres of depth! The hole itself is the opening to a system of caves and passageways that penetrate this undersea mountain. In various places, massive limestone stalactites hang down from the wall, proving that all of this was once above water. It´s a two hour boat ride out there from Caye Caulker (the divemaster had loads of time to reinsure that it was "easy stuff, man!!"..But at 40 metres below, anything is a bit risky!
We jumped in the water and cruised over some shallow corals, before seeing the wall and the hole itself. It quickly became pitch black as we descended down and down. As we did so 3 metre long sharks started circling us! Just what you need! At 40 metres your air consumption is disturbingly quick, and when Charlie heard her tank pop, she panicked! Maybe she was a bit narked (feeling drunk cause of the depth) because everything was fine! And we slowly ascended to the surface, avoiding any decompression sickness! A truely spectaculare dive! On the trip we also did two wall dives and visited the Half moon caye, a paradise-like Island, which also is a bird sanctuary! We both agreed that the diving in Belize is some of the best we´ve ever tried!
Getting back to the island, we joined the rest of the population for the sunset viewing and a few drinks of local rum! Reggae-tunes in the air, lovely seafood and sunny weather! It´s hard not to like this place! We would have loved to stay longer, but unfortunately the price-level in Belize is a bit too much for our budget, so after just three days in paradise we moved into Guatemala!
See you next time!
Go slow man! Its easy stuff!

Hej Alle!
