My last blog ended with Nat's departure to Dubai...
Since then i have had a busy fun filled week...
Nat left last wednesday and it was a bit daunting and overwhelming to be in this stange foreign city fending for myself, i surprised myself with what i achieved and the french i had to force myself to speak (very, very poorly)! After she left it was definately a case of more job hunting and on the weekends sightseeing etc..
I had to move out of my gorgeous chic appartment on Monday which meant the weekend was busy with trying to find a new place to live...in a city that is filling very quickly with yachties from all parts of the globe this is no easy feat!!!
I managed to find a self contained flat about a 20 minute walk outside of town, it cost way more than i wanted to pay but it was all that was out there! I moved into this apartment on Monday afternoon. Its really nice and has a rooftop pool with views of the port, all of old town Antibes and miles and miles of the Mediterranian to the right and views of the snow covered Alps to the left! I haven't seen these views personally but the brochure looks spectacular. It has been a miserable, cold, wet week in the Med!
On Tuesday i recieved an email from Michelle, a girl i did my STCW course with, she was coming to town on Wednesday and wanted a place to stay..It just so happened i wanted to cut the cost of my accommodation so it was a perfect situation for both of us...
While she was here she ran into Adam, a guy she knew from home, here for work as well, Adam needed somewhere to stay as well so after starting the week on my own i now have 2 awesome flatmates...with a view to extend our happy little family once more STCW friends arrive next week!!
Yesterday i took Adam and Michelle on a Carrefour run because we are living and spending on a tight budget so cooking is our cheapest option. Carrefour is a massive shop about this size of Bunnings that has everthing from groceries to ride-on lawn mowers. It is incredible. The store is so big the staff get around on rollerskates. It has 3 long aisles of alcohol and double that of cheeses....it is heaven!!!!
Michelle has also instilled a 3 drink rule when we are out and about 'networking',which i really appreciate - no more Jager benders!!
Now to the Job front...It has been tough going for everyone here, unless you have prior experience in the industry. It is still early in the season though so over the next few weeks the agencies expect it to pick up..
Having said that though i had an interview for a motor yacht called Aquarius-S (google it to check it out, also google Mirabella V another postion i was rated highly for) on thursday and it went really well although i had my doubts about the position as it was a private boat rather than a charter and the owner would have only been on board for about 6 weeks out of the entire season..In the down time i still would have retained my position and been paid quite well for it but it would have been a case of sitting on standby waiting for the owner to want to go out..
When i heard back from the Captain i was really relieved i didn't get the position (technically i did as the Captain and Chief Stew both wanted me but the owner decided to take over the recruitment process and wanted someone experienced).
From there it was back to checking in with th agencies and checking the noticeboards. I am waiting to hear back if i have some work over the weekend after checking out one noticeboard where a guy called Josh need a stew to help him bring a boat back from Italy in preperation for a huge Yacht show in Antibes next week. If he needs me, i'll be getting the train to Italy on Sunday morning and bringing a 25m motor yacht back to Antibes from San Remo and cleaning it for presentation at the show..It is an easy 125€ per day and i may be needed to maintain it during the yachtshow next week. Fingers crossed for that experience!!!
Other than that i have just recieved a call for another interview..this time on a very, very high profile 90m motor yacht (i am withholding the Name of the vessel for superstitious reasons).
So as you can see things are progressing albeit slowly at first. So now it's off to another hopefully successful interview. And to find some more accommodation for our extending family for next week.
