As i promised i have so many more exciting stories since i last wrote....
Not long after my last update i got fed up with the whole job hunting process. It was getting so frustrating that i gave up looking and just enjoyed the lifestyle and did a bit off the tourist thing. I even looked at heading up to the family in Holland...i just had to get out of Antibes!!
It just so happens though, when you stop looking for something, it will come to you in a big way and so begins the whirlwind adventure of the last 2 weeks..
About 2 weeks ago i recieved a phonecall from a guy named Peter who had happened to find a seeking employment card i had pinned to a noticeboard in the internet cafe. Peter is the Hospitality Manager for a management company that look after a fleet of 3 superyachts owned by one very rich man!!
I organised to meet up with Peter the following monday to talk about a position he had available.
After Peter left with the promise of a phone call in the next day or two i went to check my email and had a message from Nat asking me to join the Meridan in Sardinia for a weeks daywork to ready the boat for the bosses next charter. They needed me for the interior and 3 guys for deckwork. So after getting all the details i rallied Rob and Sam (flatmates) and they found Alex to come along with me for an all expenses paid road trip to Italy.
Last thursday we picked up a car, left Antibes and headed to Livorno, Italy (a 7 hour drive - the italians are crazy drivers and speed demons, but if you cant beat em, join em. A little birdy you all know was hitting 150+ kms down the Autostrada ). We then caught an 11 hour ferry ride across to Olbia, Sardinia. On the ferry i recieved a call from Nicole from the Vulcan Maritime HR department for a phone interview, she was lovely and interview went well. Once we got to Olbia we drove to Porto Cervo, which is where we were based for the next week. It is a beautiful sleepy port side town and so peaceful. The scenery was spectacular, it would have been even better though if it didn't rain the entire time we were there.
The Meridian organised our accommodation and we were put up in this amazing tuscan style, very italian hotel. So friday afternoon after a sleep and a feed we headed to the port to meet the boat. The boys were put to work immediately, but i was sent home as i wasn't needed until saturday.
The work on Meridian was good experience, we worked hard for long hours but it is rewarding to see the difference in the end. Some of the jobs are tedious and it was hard at times to understand why i was cleaning things that were already very, very clean but this is the nature of this kind of job. I was armed with cotton tips and toothpicks, no surface was left untouched. At the end of the day we are working on a 5+ star floating hotel therefore the quality has to be at an exceptional standard, besides we get paid unbelivably well for it. ( I still don't understand why is necessary to polish the inside of the drains to a shiny sparkle, the rich have got to have better things to do with their shower time that look inside the drains)
For now i am waiting for my boat to come in and will spend the week enjoying the ride....
Right now i'm off to a massage ;)
