Sunday 28th
Well we are in to our 4th day on Keppel Island, and yet again it is not what we thought. It has rained every day and night since we got here, last night one of the poles on our tent fell down. Yes that's right, our TENT!!Amy is camping!!! In all fairness it's quite a nice tent, 2 beds, bed side table, lamps… and that's where the facilities end. I have done a spring clean in here and managed to make the place a bit more homely by making 2 rugs out of blankets to put by our beds. The electricity goes off between 1 and 3 every day and then off for the night at 11. This means that any late night toilet trips go as far as the back of our tent. Luckily our tent is tucked away in a corner. JOur long days have been filled with playing monopoly, endless games of solitaire, sleeping, and reading 'famous' and 'woman's' magazine which is fine if you are 2 years behind on celebrity gossip. I have attempted to take up running in the morning and accomplished 2 mornings of a nice jog along the beach. Harder work than I thought when you are running on sand. Tom's bright ideas of buying oven food were not so bright ideas as there is no oven. Last night we had pasta and tom fried the garlic bread after defrosting it in the microwave; wasn't too soggy. Our 2 and only 2 meals left are chicken nuggets and pizza… we are not sure how to cook this yet. We do not start work until tomorrow (Monday) so will have to stay on the island til Friday to do our weeks' worth of making up for the accommodation. There is a pizza restaurant on the island that we think may need staff for next weekend so we may stay till next Sunday and work the three hours a day at the restaurant if they need us. It is 15 bucks an hour so should cover our big shop we did before the island. There are very interesting birds on the islands and an unusual species called a 'possum'. They look really cute, like big grey hamsters that scav your food. Well I'll leave it there today; you won't read this till next week as there is no internet here. Great! Anyway, we'll fill you in again in a few days.
Tuesday 30th!
So we are now back on mainland at Emu Park. The weather was awful the whole time at Keppel but yesterday which was hot and sunny. We managed to spend an hour at the beach as we thought we'd be working from 11 til 4. Turns out we only did an hours work all day, I was making up a few beds and Tom was riding round on a quad bike with the boss. Our boss came to our tent this morning and said that we could either leave today (warning us the weather was going to bad all week) which would help him out as he could do with our tent, or we could stay with him until Monday. We opted for the first idea. So we are back at Emu Park in the nice hostel and have a job offer to work at the hostel in exchange for accommodation and good pay. Decisions shall be made tomorrow!
Love to you all,
Amy and Tom x
