The not so great food in Chile....
So here's an interesting topic that keeps on surprising me: The food in Chile, specifically Santiago. Before I got here I imagined ample fresh fruits and veggies, amazing meals at the restaurants and food similar to what I ate in Venezuela, Honduras, and Mexico. Not so much. Putting bluntly, the food here sucks.
They eat massive amounts of white bread and pastries, everything has avocado on it, piles of cheese and heals of mayo. A typical sandwich has tomato, avocado and a thick slice of cheese. Not very tempting. If you don't want a sandwich you can grab an empanada, although it has the same amount of calories as a big juicy burger! Now let's talk about their salads! A typical salad has iceberg lettuce , corn, avocado and tomato . They don't have dressings so the usually douse it in oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Are you sensing the lack of variety here? Now don't get me wrong, you can definitely find delicious meals at some restaurants, but these meals come with a pretty high price, especially for someone like me, who is on a tight budget.
So, I have been eating my fairshare of sandwiches, it's unavoidable. I have eaten sushi a lot too. My favorite sushi roll was salmon, mango, cream cheese and chives wrapped in seaweed, rice and avocado! Yum! A few weekes ago I ate an amazing vegetarian crepe! Also, I allow myself to eat this amazing gelato once a week at this great place near my school named Felipo! My favorite flavors are chocolate almond, pistachio and lucuma!
Beverages: they only water they drink is carbonated! They are sugaraholics, cocacola is huge here!! ...there are many drinks like kool-aid, basically they don't drink much that's healthy.
For my Spanish speakers:
Corn - they call it Chocolo
Avocado - they call it Palta
I can't wait to eat an apple and my sandwiches on whole wheat bread! Agh - no more bleached flour and sugar!
