The Great Life
I don't know why my site has shrunk to this odd size. Sorry, I'll try and figure out how to fix it...but we'll see how that goes. :)
Yesterday I got to take my first whack at teaching! It was so much fun! I co-taught three english classes with the director of my language school, Ian. I then got the two most advanced classes to myself. What fun, I had a blast. I taught only a little grammar and then lead discussions in each class. In one class we compared/contrasted the differences between Spain and the US. In the other we were occupied with capital punishment, a law Spain doesn't have. It was incredible to hear the opinions of young Spaniards on their government. A government in which they feel the people are not represented, there is no justice or stability and one they feel they are powerless to change. Our discussions were very interesting to say the least. While I know a TESL environment is a far stretch from a US spanish classroom it makes me want to teach that much more. It's amazing how much peace comes with finally figuring out what the heck you want to do with your life.
Life in Spain is good. My Spanish is coming back in leaps and bounds, which is encouraging. I really need to work on perfecting my grammar though so my writen Spanish is as good as my spoken Spanish. I need to spend more time in the books and less time walking around gawking at all the castels, baroque architecture, art and Colon's ships. There has to be balance. But come on, I'm in Spain. I want to play!!!!!
This weekend will be mine and Janell's first excursion out of the province of Cádiz. We are going to Granada on Saturday to see La Alhambra. I am so excited!!! It better not rain this time! No rainin' on my parade. It will be nice to get out of El Puerto to see all that Spain has to offer. La Alhambra is Spain's most visited monument. It is supposed to be absolutely amazing. Next weekend we are heading to Morocco. It will be my first time in Africa and my first real experience with Arabic. AHHHH! So exciting!! We have changed our travel itinerary to exclude some of the cold. For example we have decided to skip Scandanavia for 4 days in Egypt, a camel ride, a turban and some pyramids. We like the heat...and if the Sahara can't offer it then your just out of luck.
Well, it's off to the books. Talk to you soon!
Love,
April
