The Great Life
Sorry, I can't figure out how to change the date for the last postcard. Y'all are smart and know it's January not May so you'll just have to deal.
It's hard to believe I've only been here for just a few days. I already feel like I know the city pretty well. That might be on the account that Janell and I have walked the entire thing, more than once, the last few days. We've gone on several of what Nella's mom calls ¨aventures¨, not to be confused with an ¨adventure¨. An aventure is when you don't have the slightest clue where on earth you are, but you continue to wander to see where you end up. I will give you some forewarning though, when you decided to proceed with an ¨aventure¨ make sure you have good shoes and some Euros because you're feet hurt badly at the end of the day and you're starving! Luck has it here though, you're likely to run into a ¨bageterÃa¨ before too long. Only .75€ for fresh, hot pan (bread).
We are awaiting the rest of our roomates, one of which should arrive today. Her name is Yuko and she is from Japan. We've come to learn that she doesn't speak any Spanish. I sure hope she knows some English, becuase my Japanese (sp?) is pretty sparse. Aside from ohiogoesimos, arigato and doytashtamasha I'm at a complete loss. However, I am excited for another person to arrive. The apartment is pretty quiet and Janell and I can't wait for some company!
We tried to clean up today to make Yuko feel as welcome as possible. This little task included doing laundry. This might seem like no big deal for the most part, and it's not. The washing isn't so bad, but we live on the 7th floor and you have to hang your clothes outside the window to dry. Now, if any of you know me you know that I am scared to death of heights. I attempted to hang the clothes on the line, but I got a little queasy and so Nella got stuck hanging the clothes out to dry. She froze.
Speaking of freezing, it is soooo cold here! It's just fine during the day, but at night the temp. drops quiet a bit. We have NO heat whatsoever in our apartment. I think it hovers around 48 in the house at night. We pile on the long johns, gloves, ski caps, and yes...coats to crawl into our beds that have every single blanket in the house piled on them. I hope Yuko brings a sleeping bag, 'cause she ain't gettin' my covers!!!!
I am excited for school to start on Monday. It will be nice to slip back into a daily routine. Just waiting around is a bit boring. Not to mention yesterday was christmas and so everything is closed for the weekend. We were so excited when we saw el supermercado open today...we didin't have any soap and we used all the dishes. Woops.
I promise I'll post some photos on monday when I can use the computers at school. I can't upload anything at the café. Until then, know that you're in my thoughts and prayers.
Love your traveling gringa,
Abril
