So this morning we were all going to khao San road but before that I needed to go to the train station to buy my overnight train to chiang Mai. So I told everyone to wait at the hostel for me while I 'quickly' nipped to the train station.... Famous last words!!!
I'd already learnt that the biggest hassle and hardest job over here is getting a decent taxi or tuk tuk to take you somewhere.
The tuk tuk's all wanna rip you off by offering you great fares like 20baht anywhere u like. But that's because as soon as you get in they'll take you to a few of their friends shops or a travel agents. And either get arsy with you if you don't buy anything or refuse to take u anywhere until you do buy something.
And the taxi drivers will try charge u like 200baht for a 60baht journey, it's only a few quid but I don't like being ripped off.
So anyway, luckily the hostel got one for me and he put it on his meter (which they usually flat out refuse to do) and it cost me 87baht to get there, bought my ticket and then went to get a taxi or tuk tuk back. As soon as my feet hit the pavement, it was "miss, where u go? 20baht" so I just said no and then saw a taxi.
I said to him "will u put it on the meter?" and he agreed. So I jumped in.
Then as he's attempting to drive off he says "200baht" luckily for me it was thick traffic so he couldn't just drive off.
Then I said "no, you said meter but I'll give you 100 that's maximum"
He then started saying "okay,150"
This went on and on.
Until I just said "look, I'm only paying you 100 that's it"
He laughed but said ok.
Anyway, literally 5mins into the journey were on a four lane manic Thai road In the outside lane... When yep, he breaks down!!!
Only could this happen to me!!
So there's cars beeping all behind us and he's chugging away at a clearly overheated engine. He had to get out and push the car with me inside over the four lanes, haha. Where he insisted on trying again. In the end I just got out and said I'm gonna get another taxi lol.
Luckily I came across a genuine tuk tuk driver, there are a few, and he took me back for 100baht.
So then we all left for khao San road, the four ppl I was with (Adam, Dave, Emma and Holly) were all gonna get a hostel down there so they had all their bags with them. Luckily two tuk tuk drivers said they'd take us for 300 altogether I think, which was actually pretty decent cause it was quite far.
We get to khao San road, and it was BOILING!!! I swear there was steam infront of my sunglasses. Mental!!! They found a hostel which was pretty basic but cheap and we went in a bar for food. It cost us like twice as much as it did from the place near the hostel and wasn't even as good. Ah well!!! Some of them got ham and cheese toasties cause they were cheap and it was like microwaved bread haha. Anyway within about 20mins they'd decided they were only gonna stay one night haha.
It's just like a busy market stall in Skegness or magaluf or something. I really didn't get the attraction.
Anyway the day consisted of:
Riding the river boat for quite a while which was really nice and super cheap, then we hung out in a little temple for a while. Then me, Dave and Adam decided to walk to the nearest boxing arena to see a muay Thai fight... This ended up with a tuk tuk driving us to his friends shop to buy tickets, we declined, he chucked us out in the middle of nowhere lol, glad I was with them two.
We had a map so it was all good. By this point I was dying for a wee, and from what I've seen there just aren't public toilets lol. I saw a toilet sign in a cafe and asked the man if I could go, he was really nice and said yes. So I walk through this wooden door to be greeted by a hole in the floor... No toilet roll, and a collection of pee and water all over. Anyway, I thought I'd done a good job until I pulled my shorts up and yep, I'd peed all over myself!!! Bet the Thai people were laughing so much as I walked out there haha.
When we got to the gym, it was closed lol. So then we made our way back to khao San road.
Met up with holly and emma, Had a few drinks, ate some insects (they all taste of salty peanuts) got harassed by people selling stuff, witnesses the thai police in full action when they came down and obviously the pubs aren't allowed tables on the road cause the police literally picked the tables and chairs up and threw them in the back of their truck, they even just told people to move and then picked up their tables. Was funny but random.
Next day, they all got back, chilled out for a bit then I went to the train station to catch my train....
