Tim, Lucy, Alice and myself had all booked to go on a day trip to Milford sound today which would be our last day as a four! Sad times!!
We got picked up at 620, which of course meant a very early start and of course this also meant the bus didn't turn up until 635: I mean who doesn't like standing in the cold at that time right?!?
Lucy's friend Rachel was also joining us and after we picked everyone else up, it was a 4 hour drive to where we would get on our boat at Milford sound. The driver said that the first two hours of the drive was pretty boring so it might be a good time for everyone to sleep, so of course we all tried to get to sleep to find that we had sat behind the only two people on the bus that weren't tired and wanted to talk continuously... This was going to be a long journey!
Anyway, after a long four hours we got to Milford sound and as we turned the corner into the main stretch of Milford sound it really was breathtakingly beautiful. New Zealand is just full of constant surprises and just when you think you've seen it all, BAM New Zealand smacks you in the face again!
We got on the boat and started sailing through Milford sound, which is a stretch of water that just has huge cliffs and mountains coming up from the water and you can visibly see where glaciers used to be and have left the ground looking like a big 'u' shape.
When we first started sailing, I was impressed but not overly impressed and it wasn't until I looked back and saw another boat next to one of cliffs that I suddenly realised how small and insignificant we are in this world! The boat looked like a tiny speck of white on this vast green background!!
It really was inspiring and just replaced all thoughts and words with nothing but amazement at this beautiful untouched land.
Then when it couldn't get any better a pod of dolphins started swimming round the boat and there was seal after seal laid out on all the rocks.
We sailed down the sound for an hour before it became the ocean so we turned round and headed back to the docks. As we were sailing back, a pod of dolphins came swimming along the side of the boat which was really cool and did make me think about jumping in for a second until I realised how cold it would be.
On the bus back from Milford sound everyone pretty much passed out until we got to our halfway point at Te Anau where we said bye to Tim as he was staying there for the night.
It was pretty sad to say bye as we'd all been together so long and to see Tim go off on his own although I'm pretty sure he can look after himself.
That night was pretty standard as we were all so tired and had an early start to lake tekapo in the morning.
