Hello from Texas.......
Well we are currently in Houston having driven yesterday from Dalls/Fort Worth. I will update you from Memphis in this blog.
Whilst in Memphis we visited the home of Elvis Presley which was brilliant, it reminded me of a trip to a theme park. We got to tour the ground floor and grounds of Graceland before returning to the visitors centre to view his car collection, outfits and private planes. It was quite informative about Elvis and also tacky in a cool way.
Whilst in Memphis we also visited the Civil Rights Museum which is housed in the motel where Martin Luther King was shot. It was a really interesting place to visit and what surprised us most was how recently the events took place.
After two nights in Memphis we were up early for the nine hour drive to Dallas, it was surprisingly easy to drive such a long distance. I think that it helps that all the roads are straight and not very busy.
We spent one day in Dallas, which is really very commercially now with little to see except the JFK memorial and museum. Again we visited the place where someone was shot (all these people being shot, perhaps it says something about the gun laws!).
The museum was housed on the sixth floor of the building where Lee Harvey Oswald was alleged to have shot JFK from.
The following day we headed to Colleyville, certainly the highlight of the trip. It is actually a very affluent small city just north of Dallas. We went to the library and city hall and found out that the town is actually named after a Dr Colley who was the town Doctor when people first settled there. There is a sign where he and his wife lived. Needless to say I found this a little more exciting than Tony.
In the afternoon we went into Fort Worth which is a fairly sizeable city, but without the reputation and glamour of Dallas. It has more cowboy routes and has preserved the old cattle stockyards and turned it into a tourist attraction. It was great fun and there were people on horses and indians. The best part was the rodeo in the evening. It takes place every friday and saturday night and locals come to compete in bull riding, bare back horse riding, lassoing (probably not the right spelling) and general country fun. It was brilliant and some of the bull riders are crazy!
After two fun filled days in the Dallas area we drove for about 4 hours to Houston where we are staying until tomorrow. Today we have been to the Johnson Space Centre and along to the local beach area.
It was definately worth the drive down to Texas as it is quite different to the rest of the US, not to mention the fact that it is very sunny and hot! It certainly doesn't feel like the 5th November!
We are off to Austin and San Antonio next.
