After driving through the mountains we arrived in Colorado Springs which is about an hour from Denver. We stopped for one night and visited a small town slightly up the mountains called Manitou Springs. It was a lovely traditional town with lots of good shops. We could certainly feel the change in the weather and out came our coats! Nearby is a place called the Garden of the Gods which is a national park type area with huge red rocks that look like they have just appeared out of nowhere. It was really pretty and we arrived at sunset which seemed to make the rocks glow.
The following day we drove to Denver where we have been staying since Tuesday. We were both really looking forward to getting to Denver, not least because we dropped off the hire car. We have basically been driving non-stop for three weeks and whilst it has been good to visit lots of out of the way places it has also been quite stressful. There have been many wrong turns, and trouble parking (not to mention the parking fine!!!)
Our hotel is within walking distance of downtown Denver and it is a really lovely city. It has been a bit cold but given that it is the a mile high and in the mountains we were expecting it.
We have visited the US Mint, the baseball ground and a town just outside of Denver called Golden.
The highlights of the visit have been watching the Denver Nuggets play the Portland Trailblazers at the Pepsi Arena. As you probably know both Tony and I enjoy watching football at home, and when Chelsea were playing really badly last season we were in Florida and Tony decided to follow basketball and the Nuggets. The main player is called Carmelo Anthony, hence they became his team.
I am really glad that we made the trip to Denver to watch the basketball it was brilliant and I would certainly recommend that anyone catch a basketball game if you come to the US. It was non stop action and entertainment for 3 hours. As soon as the game stopped for any reason there was something different happening. The highlight was probably the group of cheerleaders/dancers that were on the larger side, they were excellent and very funny.
Another highlight has been the trip to the Coors brewery in Golden. We took the free tour and learned about how the beer is made, but best of all we had three free beers at the end!!!! Well worth the trip to Denver alone!
Its off to Vegas next for Thanksgiving and no doubt that will be a good blog!!!
