Aloha from Hawaii
Well we made it to the final stop and have been here for just under two weeks. We are staying about two streets (or blocks) away from the beach at Waikiki and it is everything you could imagine it to be.
As it is Christmas and New Year it is really really busy, however we have still been able to sit on the beach and enjoy the lovely weather.
Whilst we have been here we have been to Pearl Harbour, where we visited the USS Arizona Memorial. The memorial is very moving as the ship is still on the bottom of the harbour just below the memorial. This has remained where it sunk and the bodies of the 1000 or so sailors were not removed so you are visiting the grave of all those men who died.
We have also visited the waterpark, which is obligatory for us as we love a good waterpark, and have been on the bus around the Island. We stopped at the North Shore as this is where they have all the big waves and surf competitions, however we did not see many surfers. The best thing about this was that we saw several sea turtles in the water about a metre or so from the shore!
Another highlight of the trip was our surfing lesson. This was very very funny!!!! Basically we were in a group of 4 with two american guys who were a bit older than us. After being given instructions on how to do it at the beach we set about paddeling out to the waves. The instructor had told us the best way to paddle to reduce wear and tear on your arms! Myself and the two other guys made it out okay, but Tony was having a little bit of trouble!!!! He was miles behind and the insturctor had to go back for him and tow him out!!
After a few attempts I caught a few waves and actually surfed, Tony surfed on his knees and almost stood up a couple of times. On the way back in he had to get a tow again, this time he made no attempt to paddle and enjoyed the ride!!!
Christmas day was a bit weird and we both felt pretty homesick, but resolved not to be too christmassy and sat on the beach all day!! In the evening we ate in a revolving restaurant at the top of a hotel.
We have enjoyed our time in Hawaii, however we are looking forward to the solitude of Fiji.
Happy New Year everyone!
