Saturday 29th June.
A better night, thanks to unearthing the earplugs, and getting the beatings of the combo boiler,(I was able to have a hot bath). Quite a lot of rain overnight as everything was very wet. After a breakfast shopping trip, we took Sue and LIz off to the Gardens exhibition and left them there while we went off to take up from where we had left off yesterday. Unfortunately the museum was closed but I'll try again in the next few days. I did use or try to use the loo. Very difficult, I am quite tall and virtually had to stand, most of the Portuguese are quite short so however they manage I have no idea.
We found a lovely heated very ornate green house with a lovey Lilly pond where we spent many a happy minute frog watching and listening. Their colours were something else and quite beautiful but the noise was very peculiar, a cross between an coot and a magpie!??! I spent ages trying to get a picture of his throat pouch inflated but to no avail.
We wandered back through town collecting bits for our supper on the way and saw a wedding with the girls done up to the nines in some very posh/expensive outfits, and killer heels.
Early to bed as its an early start to take the girls to get their flight home. A real shame they can't stay to complete the week. We have found are way about now and are ready to go off adventuring now. Have omen to some of the locals who have told us where to head to get the nature side of the area are.
Sunday June 30th 2012.
Left to 03.30 to take the girls to the airport and by 04.30 we arrived. Hardly a soul about on the motorway and so easy to get to. Ponte de Lima gets better and better.
Our plan was to mosey up the coast road and do some exploring but it was still too dark so we headed for home and a few more hours sleep!
The weather seems much improved today and it looks like a clear sunny is in store.
Got up at 10,did some house keeping whilst waiting for LIz to surface.
I forgot to say that yesterday, whilst people watching at a bar what should pull up but the Clerk of the Course for the 9th Ponte de Lima Classic Car Rally.
So whilst sweeping my bedroom balcony we were able to watch all the competitors driving past. London taxis to very smart Meharis, as well as a couple of 2CVs I could have found a home for! I suspect if I had gone over to the square they would all have been there, much as they were in Brugges last summer.
I thought the flat next door was empty and may well be during the week, but today whilst I was hanging out the washing I noticed a pair of hands clutching cooking tongs tending a very interesting rack perched on the ledge outside the kitchen window complete with what looked like 6 individual joints of pork or chicken . I thought at first it was a spirit stove but it was actually sort of an electric barbecue. Very impressed and do I need one I ask myself?
Being Sunday the town was heaving not to mention the 5 coach loads of folk from where ever and yet another little craft market, selling cheap little wooden toys, pony rides and acres of desiccated, sorry, cured ham and sausage.
A huge improvement in the weather has brought all and sundry down to the river for their picnics. All in all a very continental atmosphere.
We decided to do touristy things and spent 2E on a 'train'ride, novel, but not worth the effort. Wouldn't recommend it!
I am now investigating the wifi zone and hey it's working. I am so chuffed.
