Leaving behind the stunning island of Ometepe was pretty tough but we were heading for Christmas in San Juan del Sur, a fairly small but vibrant beach town, where we were meeting some fellow travellers we met in Bastiamentos! We had the image of a low key Christmas but that went out the window on day one. We popped to the hostel bar for a quick one & discovered the Enlgish & Ozzie masses! Several hours & several bottles of rum later we were caught up in a street carnival dancing the night away with the locals but we still had time to squeeze in a late night taco!
We had a great couple of days & managed to stay sober long enough to book a boat for Christmas day.
The day was amazing, after exchanging presents (chocolate cake mix & a new eyeliner for Alice & peanut butter for me) we hit the docks! With beer & Mai Tais flowing we set sail for the deserted beach where we were spending the afternoon. We exchanged secret santa presents & everything from a santa pinata & a water pistol filled with rum, to a space hopper switched hands! If you have never space hopped off a boat on Christmas day you should really try it! We also managed to squeeze in the boats first man overboard in 4 years, sorry about that guys! When we finally returned to dry land we cleaned off & headed ouf for a recommended pizza joint which gave us our first blue cheese of the trip (thanks Santa) then still had time for a live band! Finish it off with a late night trip to the beach where somebody decided they were an otter (good job Petey) then home to bed. So pretty much your standard Christmas!
Happy Christmas all!
