Leaving behind the culinary delights of Cuszco (oh & that world wonder thing) we were heading towards the Bolivian border & the town of Puno. En route we decided to change our plans & head straight to La Paz which only permitted a quick lunch stop on the shores of Lake Titicaca (teehee!) We had a quick picnic on the shore (of takeaway falafel from Cuszco of course) & admired it's beauty & made several childish jokes. Then we were back on the bus & heading for La Paz, during our lunch stop we had managed to secure a booking at the Wild Rover hostel so we were clearly in for a quiet stay! The approach to La Paz comes with an amazing view over the city which was nearly as breathtaking as the 4000m altitude. After 30 ish hours we were glad to finally get of the bus & decided to have a quiet night in to recover & acclimatize so we headed to the bar for a snack. Irish hostel, Irish bar.......worth a punt! Excuse me barman do you have any cider? No sorry! Ok your finest local big beers then! 30 seconds later, actually sorry we do have cider I think it's called Strongbow! Score! So after several Strongbows & a big beer at altitude after 30 hours on a bus & no dinner we were clearly a little intoxicated. The food menu added to the party, pork chops mash 'n gravy for me & jacket potatoe cheese 'n' beans for the lady. So after a good taste of home (food & drink!) we retired.
A hearty free breakfast & lots of coffee got us moving in the morning. We had a good explore of La Paz taking in San Pedro the famous prison, setting for the backpacker favourite Marching Powder & the huge markets including the witches markets. We declined the herbs & llama foeutus's & instead stocked up on nice warm Alpaca wool clothes for our trip down south to the mountains. We grabbed jumpers, hats & gloves at bargain prices & then realised we were going to have back pack issues! The rest of the time was spent exploring, both La Paz & the Strongbow fridge, until we left 2 days later. We were on our way to the fabled wine & steak in Mendoza so we were kind of rushing. We dashed through Potosi (met a Welsh guy, didn't go to the mines,) Tupisa (overpriced & not as Alice thought two pizza's) & Saltir (very pretty looked like Italy) & then headed for promised land!
