A stop over between our flight from Mexico and the one to Colombia, which strangely is the cheapest way to get from Central to South America, Miami allowed us a small one day holiday in the middle of our travels. An English speaking place with newspapers and magazines we can understand! Was a real treat! We arrived late on the Wednesday night, headed straight for our hostel (sharing a cab with a model who had just arrived back in the city after filming an ad for dunkin' doughnuts) before heading out to a bar we had read about online. It was just called 'room' and even the hostel staff hadn't heard of it, despite it only being two blocks away. Tucked down a side street we eventually found the tiny place and sat down, happy to finally be there after the early start to catch a bus from Tulum to Cancun. We didn't peruse the menu. We knew exactly what we wanted…. CIDER!!! It was magners, not exactly what we would choose at home, but after 3 and a half months of no cider it tasted like heaven! It was a really cute place, had pretty good music and beers from all over the world. It was a wonder we were able to tear ourselves away.. but we were hungry. So onwards we must go! Ocean Drive in Miami is a bit nuts, its overloaded with bars and restaurants and during the week even the nicest places fight for your custom, offering night long happy hours, 241s and percentages off your final bill. Although we'd agreed to allow ourselves more than our usual budget for our 2 night stay, this appealed to our thrifty backpacker nature. We had dinner at the Waldorf and had one of the best meals we'd had in a long time, and like the crazy party animals we are, were tucked up in bed by midnight!
So with only one full day in Miami what would you do? We decided to take full advantage of Miami's reputation in the only way we knew how……..eating & shopping! After figuring out a game plan over coffee we set out to explore with a stroll down the beach, very impressive. Neither of us fancied flexing our guns at the free beach gyms so after a long walk down south beach we headed for one of the many eateries. We chose a bookstore/restaurant (bit random) but once again the food was spectacular, we both opted for salads.. but with what American's deem as salad don't expect it to be healthy! They were covered in blue cheese and portions bigger than your head! Suitably fuelled we set out to tackle the shops & I'm pretty sure that's where I lost Alice. Several hours & several stores later & we had restocked with everything from facewash to vintage dresses to hairdryers! With the shopping bug slain (really?) we set out for dinner, just pausing momentarily to buy some new shoes, & decided to stick with the theme and go for proper American burgers. The food was once again awesome & huge & the place also sold (drumroll please) STRONGBOW! Amazing! We were planning to go to a bar that sold it later but having a burger & a cider was cool. We decided to go to the bar anyway, of course, & as soon as Alice had bought one more pair of shoes (I think they leave the shops open late to prey on the weak) we were there.
Alice's defence: I needed some new flip flops… and the second pair of shoes are SUGAR BOOTS! They don't sell them in the UK anymore! AND THEY WERE ON SALE!
We had to get up at 6am to be at the airport in time for our flight so we called it a night. Would have been a great nights sleep had it not been for the group of (british, of course..) lads who crashed back into the room at 4am and decided it was a good time to 'hang out'. Both us and the other girl in the room who also had a 6am start to catch a flight really had to hold back from kicking them out of the room, but you can be assured that we were not quiet when we packed up and left in the morning. Revenge is sweet.
