After an early start a Dunkin' doughnuts & coffee breakfast set us up for the day, crossing the easiest border we had come across and finally getting to Guatamala! A week later than scheduled due to our minor scuba dive addiction, Marije and Julio picked us up from the bus station in Guatamala City and drove us to their MANSION!
Reasons Marije & Julio are awesome:
1. They took us to a veggie restaurant (points with Alice)
2. They have a fully stocked bar (points with Steve)
3. They have 2 super cute puppies!!! (points with both of us!)
We spent the first night having a 3 course veggie meal then back to their Casa for muchos drinks & catch up time. After several weeks away we were so grateful to be pampered with proper beds, awesome pillows & hot showers! We woke late the following morning (shocking) in the peaceful neighbourhood & made a huge brunch before setting out to explore the city with Julio as an impromptu tour guide. Despite a slightly dubious reputation Guatamala City was lovely with lots to see & some great architecture. On the way home we stopped at Julio's brother-in-law's Lebanese restaurant & picked up a feast of hummus, pitas & falafel, much to our delight! We crashed in front of a real TV (another luxury!) watching a real movie & feeling very spoilt. With the baby shower in the morning the sensible ones (the ladies) retired to bed leaving the boy's to drink bourbon into the wee small hours!
Having never been to a baby shower, I wasn't sure quite what to expect... especially given it was due to be en espanol! It was filled with strange games like baby stuff bingo and 'guess how much toilet paper can fit around Marije's baby bump'! Its a whole other world than I'm used to, but perfectly balanced by a 3 course breakfast... something I'm much more comfortable with! Marije's mother in law had organised the whole thing, from the beautiful table decorations to the delicious cake.. and made me feel so welcome! It was mostly in Spanish so cue awkward not-knowing-whats-going-on moments, but Siebrig, a Dutch friend of Marije's who lives in Guatamala and whose Spanish is FAR better than mine, acted as translator! After a morning of girlie time and with guests heading off with their handmade chocolate party favors (!), the boys arrived.. which meant it was time to get on the road to Julio's family's weekend house in Antigua. Score!
