Our next stop after the Drakensburgs was Johannesburg, the murder capital of the world! As we only had one full day there, we booked onto an organised tour. First we visited the highest tower block in Africa, with views of the city on all sides (not the most picturesque city, but never mind). Then, we headed to the Soweto township where a local showed us around. The people there are some of teh poorest in the country, but also some of the friendliest. The children ran up to us shouting "white people, white people" (in Zulu) and clambered to have their photos taken (they shout ´shoot me, shoot me", meaning for you to take a picture). Our guide showed us how the people are being encouraged to use any land they have to gorw veg to sell, and took us to Sky a community centre funded by NBA players which educates children who can´t afford school and runs choirs, AIDS education and other community projects. Then we travelled to a church which was used to hold political meetings, when they were illegal during Apartheid, and saw the bullet holes through the roof from when the police shot at groups of students who met there. Next, we went to Orlando West, the school where the first casualty of the student protests died (the students were protesting against the government´s plans to force them to learn in Afrikaans, rather than their Bantu language, and Hector Peterson, an unarmed thirteen year old boy was shot dead) After visitng the Hector Peterson museum, and the Apartheid museum, both of which were interesting if not exacltly énjoyable´we headed back to our hostel.
