Long day in Budapest. We spent it with our flatmates, Nick and Mel from America. First we went to the Terror House Museum, where the Arrow Cross Party was based during the war, and in the 50s it was a Soviet HQ. It was an interrogation centre, and there were displays of torture instruments, gallows and reconstructed cells, as well as Soviet espionage equipment, Military uniforms and several TVs with first-hand accounts of the atrocities. One particularly gruesome video was played in the lift as you descended into the basement, which described the method of execution.
We went to a shop to get food and drink, and found that Hungary is cheap. We decided to go out for lunch, so wandered to the city centre and found a lunch deal - pizza, pancake and drink for 6€. It was ok, but the service was slow, so we didn't get away until 3.
We crossed the river to the Buda side of the city (we're staying in Pest) and climbed up through some gardens to the Citadella, a fortress that overlooks the whole city with a big statue that provided lots of shade. Budapest is hot, but not as hot as Croatia or Italy, and there's lots of shade because most of the buildings are tall.
After this we found a bar with wifi and booked our hostel in Vienna for 3 nights. Watched a bit of the Wimbledon finals. We were in the castle district after walking through a long road tunnel, so went to see the royal palace, which now houses the Budapest History Museum and the Hungarian National Gallery. But it was a Sunday evening and they were both shut. Good views though. We walked up to St Matthias' Church, the big church in the centre of the district, which has a decorative roof - terracotta with green and black patterns. There was a small band playing in a restaurant nearby, which included a cimbalom player.
We wandered back down the hill and walked over the Chain Bridge, past the parliament buildings and back to the hostel to buy some bits for dinner. We managed to buy yeast instead of butter, which comes in cubes here.
We're going out to a bar tonight for some drinks and a game of darts.
