Walked across Prague to the funicular railway, which we had to queue for for a bit, but it took us up to the park on the western side of the Vltava river, where we climbed up the Petrín Tower, a smaller imitation of the Eiffel Tower from a few years later. From here we got excellent views all over Prague, not just the city centre.
After this, we walked down the hill until we got to Prague Castle, which is more of a complex, like in Budapest, than an actual castle. We bought a 'short visit' ticket they got us into St. Vitus' Cathedral, the old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica and the Golden Lane. To be perfectly honest, all of this was a bit boring as we had done so much of this sort of stuff already. The cathedral was the best - it's one of the biggest we have been to and is nice inside with its organ and stained glass windows. The palace was disappointingly empty, with just a few rooms spanning off the central coronation room, which was totally bare. The best bit about this was the 'window of defenestration', where in the middle ages some people were thrown out of the window into the valley below, but survived. This sparked the 30 years' war.
The basilica was nothing to write home about; I suppose the red facade was quite good, and there was a display of bones at the exit, but it didn't say who they belonged to. The Golden Lane was an old street of tiny houses, all painted in different colours. It is called this because it used to be the home of several goldsmiths. Inside some of the houses were reconstructions of ancient interiors through the ages, including some of mildly famous residents. The ceilings were too low for me, and all the displays were shielded by plexiglass, so you could only stand in the entrance room of each house and look inside. The upstairs of all the houses had been connected into one long corridor that featured displays of lots of different suits of armour and weapons.
After this we walked back down the hill into the city, did a bit of shopping and went for dinner in TGI Friday's for the 2nd night running.
You read so much about Prague being a dodgy place, and to be extra vigilant when visiting, but it's just like any other place, and we felt perfectly safe, even in the more crowded areas. It's a really nice, picturesque place to visit.
