The next chapter of our adventure was to head further north to Kalumburu, which was originally a mission founded in 1908 by Benedictine monks. The mission still runs here and they have a store and a campground and a wonderful museum with an interesting history. The road between Mitchell Plateau and Kalumburu continued to be reasonably corrugated and then deteriorated to about 40km/hr for the last 20km. The Kalumburu Road heading north has been a lot rougher, with lots of big corrugations, especially between the Gibb River and Drysdale Station. We stopped for a few days at the King Edward River campground so that we could explore the Mitchell Plateau and see the well known 'Mitchell Falls'. After El Questro, the Gibb River Road crosses the Pentecost River which is impassable in the wet season and saltwater crocodiles are found here. It's also a tidal river, so thankfully we had no problems with the depth of the water and we'd made sure Anita wasn't going to cross on her own on the bike. After two weeks of no reception, we finally have a window of opportunity to update our travels. Kununurra is such a great place to explore lots of destinations, which are only a day trip away. We have been blessed with a great camping spot at the edge of a lagoon where we have been able to canoe (until we heard there is a 3m saltie on the loose!), look for 'freshies' at night with the torch, marvel at the birdlife and enjoy magic sunset views every evening.
