After El Questro, the Gibb River Road crosses the Pentecost River which is impassable in the wet season and saltwater crocodiles are found here. It's also a tidal river, so thankfully we had no problems with the depth of the water and we'd made sure Anita wasn't going to cross on her own on the bike. We had given her a lift to the main road from El Questro and had hoped to meet up with her again at Home Valley Station. The scenery at the crossing is like a painting with the Cockburn Ranges in the background and the crisp colours of the Kimberley landscape. The weather has become increasingly warmer, so we were sweltering in 36 degree heat and looking forward to a cool off, so it was a welcome relief when we arrived at Home Valley and they had a lovely swimming pool!! We met up with Kane's stepmum, Liz who works there and had a lovely evening catching up on the latest news of the grandchildren.
Anita arrived in good time on her bicycle too and joined us for dinner. She did have help at the crossing but also walked across with her bike! The next day we met her again on the side of the road and Alf did a little repair job on her pannier bag as well as helping her out with some extra water and refreshments. Hopefully we will find out how she went on the rest of her trip.
The road surface of the Gibb has been pretty good so far with the usual corrugations. We've only been driving short distances inbetween the sights and stations and even had scones with jam & cream at Ellenbrae Station. Each station seems to have their own quirky features. We stopped at a great camp on the Gibb River just a few kilometres north on the Kalumburu Road along with quite a few other travellers. We've noticed that the numbers seem to diminish once you leave the bitumen and there are also a lot more young families and camper trailers. We plan to continue north to the Drysdale Station and then on to the Mitchell Plateau.
