Today we woke up late, as we planned to have a relaxing day. We made our way down to breakfast, and had the usual.
After we decided to go to the catacombs, but we didn't actually know where they were. Lucky we had a map with tourist information sites on it. We thought.
It took us a good half an hour to find the information centre, that was only about 200m away. We went around the block a couple of times before realising it was this little hut in the middle of the road. All was not lost though, as we were able to look around all the souvenir shops in Monte Marte.
The tourist info guy showed us no problem, and it was only a quick walk to the metro station, where we bought tickets that took us right to Danfert Rochereau, the metro station directly opposite to the catacombs. On the metro, an old bud hopped on and started playing his accordian, he was pretty awesome, and we gave him some coinage for his efforts.
Woohoo! We though as we were there, right outside of the entrance but as we planned to get in line, we realised the line was about 10, 000 kilometres long. Hahaha TYPICAL!
So we went to the back, and in about ½ an hour we moved about 20metres.
My phone started ringing, and to our surprise, it was Serge, my second cousin. He was actually in Paris and came to see us.
We dumped the line, and I went to wait outside the metro station for Serge, and Trudy went to buy a new sim card, as the english one ran out of credit, and you couldn't top up in France, it ran out, cause actually receiving calls cost you money apparently.
About 40 minutes later, Serge arrived, I noticed him straight away, cause he looked the same as from 7 years ago. He found a park, and Trudy, Serge, Joey (his son) and Alex (that's me) went to a small cafe for lunch.
I had a steak, which was good and juicy, and Trudy had to be healthy and had a salad.
We talked about stuff, usually in English, but answered and tried to use French as much as possible. We even asked Serge to talk in French for us to practise. We sat down for a couple hours which was nice.
After lunch, we walked towards the Jardin du Luxembourg, which is the Park outside a kind of parliament house in the city. It was pretty :-).
After we saw l'Eglise Saint Sulpice, and Trudy actually translated a sign that was completely in French to English for me.....and it was correct according to Serge.
Serge was helping Trudy to make sentences, and they actually had a pretty good conversation, Trud used words I haven't even heard of before, and sounded quite French.
We then walked up to Notre Dame which looked much nicer in the sunshine, (yes it was a great day today) and then sat down again at a cafe for a drink.
The river was right in front of us, and Notre Dame was just to the right, so it was nice a great place to have a drink.
Serge had to go at around 5, as it was a 3hr drive to get home. So we said our goodbyes.
Trudy and I walked along the river, looking at little stalls people had open, then started walking home.
Me being the fatty that I am, got a hot dog, and a Nutella crepe on the way, Trudy had a chocolate one....Hey, we are on holidays. haha
Anyway, we did see some hippy looking street performers on the way, and got back to the hotel eventually.
Tomorrow we say goodbye to Paris, and say hello to Nice.
~Alex.
