Hi everyone! We have arrived in San Francisco safe and sound after our 16hr bus journey. Pretty uneventful trip except when our bus driver went home and there wasnt another one to replace him! So we were sat at an empty bus shelter at 5am unattended and with the engine running until he showed up!
Thought we should let you all know that there has been a slight change to our itinerey! Due to lack of funds we have decided to forgoe Mexico and fly to New Zealand a month early. This means that we will be flying to Auckland on 24th June 2007 instead of the 24th July. Therfore we will be working for 4 months instead of 3 hopefully saving some dosh for the rest of our trip, however a Bunji or a skydive may have to be fitted in! Unfortunately this does not mean we are coming home early so you'll have to carry on missing us until 1st March 2008!
Still going to LA next week and managing to fit in Universal Studios and Disney, now can you see why we have been running out of money,so much to do!
First day in San Fran got to know our roomie Leoni who was from Brighton of all places! Also went for free dinner which was Mexican but there was no meat!!!!
Next day had a trek down to the Greyhound to get our tickets for LA then walked up to Union Square where all the fancy shops are and then to City Hall which is pretty impressive. We then decided to walk all the way to Fishermans Wharf. Didnt quite realise how far it was and that it encountered quite a few verticle hills! Still finally got there and got our tickets for Alcatraz tomorrow. Also went to see the Sea Lions who famously inhabit Pier 39 and Kate quite innocently asked why some were brown and some black, Alex replied sarcastically 'that's because some have just come out the water Kate" Slight blonde moment!!
Next stop Alcatraz, got the ferry over and took the audio tour around the cell house. Was really interesting as it was an ex-prison officer who narrated. It also went thro the different escape attempts, how life was on Alcatraz and about its famous inhabitants. Did you know Al Capone died from Syphallis??!! Also Robert 'the birdman' Stroud was kept in solitary confinement for his entire time there! Headed back to the mainland and went to Bubba Gump Shrimp for dinner was soooo cool! Got some good pics (that will be on the site once we're in LA!!!) Walked back to the hostel via Lombard Street which is home to the Crookiest Street in the world.
Saturday we hired bikes and rode over the Golden Gate Bridge, my god it was so far! 9 miles!!!! Got off and walked up the hills mind but it was really fun going over the bridge if a little breezy! Dropped the bikes off and walked down to California Street which is home to Nob Hill which is one of the steepest streets in San Fran. You have all probably seen a picture of a cable car going up a really steep hill, well now we have the same pic!! Also went to see Oceans 13 always good to have an afternoon of Clooney and Pitt!!
Our last day in San Francisco as off to LA tomorrow and we went to the Haight Street festival which was celebrating 40years since the summer of love. Lots of tye-dye,henna and fortune telling! We went to have our destiny's told (it was free) and the guy correctly stated Alex is the type of person who is always smiling and that you go to for cheering up and that Kate is good at acting as a decision maker (hmm sometimes!!) Olivia from Southampton also came with us and spent the rest of the afternoon strolling around Golden Gate Park. Got a little lost trying to find the Japanese Tea Garden but got there eventually. Quiet night as gotta pack for tomorrow plus think we've OD'd on the sun! Overall had a great time in San Fran and happy to report haven't even felt a tremor!
